GENCO appreciation thread (37)

So, everybody has their favourite studio, be it Bones or Gonzo or what have you. As for me, it's Kamiyama Mangetsu-chan GENCO.

http://www.genco.co.jp/ (with some English info at http://www.genco.co.jp/eng/profile.html)

Their lineup contains some amazing shows:

  • Genshiken
  • Azumanga Daioh
  • Kino's Journeys
  • Alien 9
  • Onegai Teacher
  • Satoshi Kon's movies Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers
  • Takashi Nakamura's (who did Fantastic Children) A Tree of Palme

Of course, not all of their shows are quite that perfect (what the hell was up with Onegai Twins, anyway?), but overall their hit-to-miss ratio is pretty good, and their good shows are really good.

Now, the real reason I created this thread was to pimp their new show, Honey & Clover.

No subs yet, but ANBU & Solar are supposedly working on it.

It's seems, from watching one episode raw, to be a pretty funny and intelligent shoujo show. The art is wonderful, the music is wonderful, the directing is wonderful, and the jokes are funny even when only get half the dialogue. It reminds me a little of Kare Kano, a little of Koi Kaze, and maybe even a tiny bit of FLCL, at least in its use of music.

Also, the stop-motion food opening animation is not to be missed.

I thought Azumanga's studio was JC Staff. These Japanese companies sure are confusing!

I guess GENCO is more of a production company. EITHER WAY!

Ya, GENCO seems to be more of a production company than anything. They're okay.

This show just keeps getting better and better. Episode 10 (with the group taking an early-winter boat trip to a near-abandoned parkland) was wonderful, and then they go and follow it up with an even more moving episode.

I am so grateful to you, WAHa.06x36, for turning me on to this series. It's simply one of the best anime I've seen in years.

As it turns out, GENCO's other show last season, Zettai Shounen, was quite awesome too.

I finally watched Kujibiki Unbalance too (a GxNxO show!), but it didn't really amuse me all that much. It had a few moments, though. It did achieve what it set out to do fairly well - to be the show the people in Genshiken are obsessed about - but it wasn't really the kind of show I'd personally enjoy.

A bit behind, but I just got to see the second episode of H&C. It is as awesome as advertised. The writing isn't ham-fisted like so many other love comedies. Hagu's happy mule dance was great, but I'm kind of dissapointed she hasn't had much dialogue.

I had the same worry but don't worry. She gets more and more confident and speaks more over the eps. I hated her at first but am growing to want to support her. In the latest raw ep (13) she's gone through a lot.

Latest copipe appearing in the Zettai Shounen thread... and why am I posting it here, because well, it's Zettai Shounen, and this board is dead! (compared to say, DQN)

All you guys saying you'd like to fuck and whatnot disgust me, you know. How dare you say that sort of thing about a children's anime on NHK. Obviously your minds are in the gutter since you're always playing erogames... Don't you ever feel ashamed writing that sort of thing? For your family, your friends, your lovers, and yourself

And there sure are a lot of people here thinking this is perfectly fine, too... There's just about nobody telling them to shut up... Well, I guess in the end 2ch is just full of dirty scribbles in the toilet.

---
Thing is, I don't know exactly what 中田氏 is, it's part of the prhase 一日一回XXXXXXタンに中田氏して孕ませたい ... something about making someone pregnant so I assume it means 'fuck'.

Japanese people need a free love movement!

probably the equivalent of "I'd hit it"

Bump for Honey & Clover episode 15 goodness.

I'm loving the way Mayama is sliding towards evil bastard status.

Do you like intelligent and well-written romantic drama and comedy?

Do you like chick stories of a frustrated old girl way past the expiration date not succeeding at getting her pawns on her alpha male but surrounded anyway by a harem of effeminate boys who have nothing better to do but babble at nauseum while harassing non-threatening, ugly lolis?

19 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-08-02 14:25 ID:Heaven

Your summary is non-sensical and irrelevant!

Also, nobody's hotter than Tetsujin!

Ha, I just read elsewhere someone complaining the show was starting to overuse its gay jokes...
I'm sorry, I'm not a 腐女子(yaoi fangirl).

Which is it now? I remember having downloaded the first episode, skimming through it as I needed disk space and then decided to delete it...

I watched Honey and Clover within a week. I found myeself tear-wet at the end! It was not a wery exciting show, but very touching. I think it was kinda dumb that we didn't get to see the Yamada vs Other girl-thing resolve.

Zettai Shounen update: Ep 22 really pushes the acceptable limits of inter-species romance!

Zettai Shounen, with scriptwriting by Elf Sternberg?

I just finished watching Honey & Clover, and damn, that was worth every minute of it. The last episode was adorable.

Now I need to find someone who has both watched Honey & Clover and read Bruce Sterling's Holy Fire, so I can see if I'm just delusional when I think the one scene in episode 23 was a dead ringer for a scene from Holy Fire.

Watched all of it. Very very good series. When Takemoto forced the pair of scissors out of Morita's hand it seriously leveled up.

34 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-11-19 15:45 ID:Heaven

What I liked with it was how the first ending song returned on the last episode. I didn't like the second ed.

Me too. I recently started watching it again after it re-hooked me while sorting my archives. It's that good. Only now I can notice more of the background things, like the insert songs. They didn't stick with me the first time around but now I'm finding I like a lot of them.

36 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-12-23 12:52 ID:Heaven

It's too bad none of the insert songs live up to the one in episode 1. That was was pure brilliance, along with the animation. I watched it over and over and over again.
