Pani Poni Dash (28)

Whoooooooooa. Either the show or the reference catching went WAY up in complexity (episode 8). They were probably already there, I guess, but so many?

Never knew about that Mario trick, either.

I hear this anime is more than just a boring loli show, confirm/deny

I heard (and saw, from screenshots) that it's basically a pretty crazy show that parodies a lot of other shows, games, 2channel memes, etc.
Still haven't watched it, though.

At times, it rolls around in its own loliness, but not on the most horrific extent of the term. I think it's worth watching simply because it's free, and it really is as zany and weird as they say. I saw somewhere once on /a that it was the most blatant otakusploitation show since Nurse Witch Komugi. I gotta agree with them: there's Mario Bros. pipes, ripoffs on Mazinger Z and Getter Robo, etc., and a perpetually depressed rabbit. It's a "WTF" anime more than it is loli, far more so. It has a surprisingly large cast as well; think three seperate Azumanga Daioh episodes all at once with a lot of 2chan refs and you've got Pani Poni Dash.

Extra: I think the OP and ED are kickass. The first ten eps (?) have a really '60s-ish OP animation to them. I think it's totally awesome.

>the most blatant otakusploitation show since Nurse Witch Komugi

Yes.

I like PPD; it doesn't make any claim of being anything 'meaningful' - it's just fun, wacky entertainment for anime fans.

I haven't said WTF while watching an anime this much since Excel Saga!

7 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-10-06 20:06 ID:FPQKzysa

My head 'asploded when I watched the first few episodes with some friends of mine. So much funny it hurts.

> a lot of 2chan refs

2ch

I already stated elsewhere that I watched one episode, and pretty much every joke fell flat. It just wasn't funny. The timing of the jokes was off, the random bits were random just for the sake of it and not actually funny, and the otakusploitation was so obvious, I couldn't stand it. At least let me pretend there's something else to the show than pandering, OK?

Maybe it gets better, I don't know, but I was thoroughly underwhelmed by the first episode.

It does get better. The first episode was substandard. You could try watching 8, since there's no real plot, and only a few backreferences.

Hmmmm I see.

11 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-11-01 09:14 ID:p87ZUxyt

Schrodinger's Piyopiyo? Oh, man.

The new OP is definitely a step down.

>>8 I agree. Just random isn't funny, it has to at least have a point. And after 2 episodes, I already hate all of the cast. Is it supposed to be like that?

> The new OP is definitely a step down.

I think the problem is that Ai Nonaka can't sing. The Kurumi Momose version on the single CD is much better.

14 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-11-11 01:23 ID:YNK9a4lU

I'd heard that playing the Ichijou and Kurumi versions simultaneously produces interesting results. Confirm/deny?

15 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-11-11 02:26 ID:OnpXAPTH

>>14

It's unimpressive. Ichijou ver and Kurumi ver are somehow in almost perfect sync, but there's some dissonance on some of the background instruments.

Has anyone seen the ggfansubs version? Is it good?

>>16 IMO gg is better. Much less cluttered screen, they put the extra stuff in a separate PDF. Thumbs up.

18 Name: Random Anime Otaku 2005-11-29 09:29 ID:p87ZUxyt

OMG, a Pratchett reference.

Incidentally, this show can drop both animation AND plot without batting an eye.

Ugh I saw gg ep15, it was badly cluttered with useless info that should have gone into the pdf. (Basic Instinct's leg crossing? Duh!)

I watched episodes 1-14 just now. Short version: It gets a bit better, but not much. Overall, forgettable.

Long version:

  • Character-driven humor does not work if you don't introduce or build up your characters first. It took me about five episodes to reverse-engineer the jokes to the point where they started to make some sense.
  • Character-driven humor doesn't really work either if your characters are badly constructed. Come on, even some of the characters in the main group are one-joke throwaway characters. "Of the year"? What the hell? Those aliens just have to go, too. Completely frivolous and unfunny.
  • References might be funny, but when there are so many of them that you start wondering if there are actually any original jokes, that's no good.
  • Oyasumi-fansubs don't help either by stuffing the screen full of translation notes. Not only are they horribly distracting and belong in a separate file, as Sling says, but I even spotted a number of errors in them, so I have no idea if I can trust them. And they put them in for the smallest reference ("This eye catch is a reference to Kill Bill" - no really, I had no idea!), and even for things that were obviously not references (Homer Simpson? What?)

I did like that ojou-sama and her confused crush on that one guy. But the series seems to have quickly forgotten about that.

the only worthy thing about the series is rei

23 Name: Sling!XD/uSlingU 2005-12-27 13:25 ID:Heaven

I like those aliens. They provide a breather and an anchor point in the general spastic maniac motion.

Bump for a important question:

Is it better to meet Satomi Koutarou or Chuck Norris?

I cannot say myself.

The only reason it's "Pani Poni Dash" and not "Pani Poni" is because they're trying to run from Chuck Norris' roundhouse kicks.

But he just likes the chase, so he gave them a head start.
