A SEVERED head of a newborn baby was found in a parking lot of a company office in central Japan today, police said.
"The head was not cut with a knife. It appears that the head was pulled from the body," a police spokesman said.
Police believed the baby was only two to three days old.
An employee at the shipping equipment manufacturer found the head this morning at Oyama in Tochigi prefecture, 75km north of Tokyo.
No other details were immediately available, the spokesman said.

On the afternoon of Nov 17, Kaede Ariyama, a seven-year-old first-grade school girl at Tomiokita Primary School in Nara Prefecture, went missing on her way home from school.
Kaede's mother tried to reach Kaede on her cell phone repeatedly, but she got no answer. She reported her daughter's disappearance to police.
Kaede was found dead around 12 a.m. in a ditch next to a farm road. There was no demand for ransom money; however, police determined that Kaede was kidnapped and slain. That's about all theyhave been able to determine.
After an autopsy, one investigator remarked, "Kaede's mouth was damaged badly, apparently after her death. For some reason, the kidnapper must have killed her first and then injured her mouth after the killing."
The autopsy found that Kaede was drowned in city water, which suggests that she was killed in a house. Investigators believe the kidnapper killed her while she was naked and then dressed her afterwards.
A source related to the police investigation said, "The way the kidnapper killed her suggests that he was sexually abnormal. In this kind of murder case, the victim usually scratches the skin of the killer while struggling. In this case, the killer is believed to have grabbed her hair and pushed her face into water, killing her immediately and not giving her any chance to resist."
The damage that the killer did to Kaede's mouth suggests how abnormal the killer was. One investigator remarked, "A total of four teeth ― two front teeth of her upper and lower gums ― were extracted. And both edges of her mouth were cut. The killer must have forced her to swallow something alien."
Masahiko Ueono, former president of Tokyo Inspection Medical Center, said, "I have examined thousands of murder cases, involving cut faces or ears, but I have never seen any case where the teeth were extracted by cutting the mouth. The killer must have used a tool like a pair of pliers."

What happened that afternoon?
Kaede's father Shigeki Ariyama is 30 years old and works for a company in Higashi Osaka City. Her mother Eri is 28. Kaede has a two-year old sister.
Neighbors said, "Kaede was a very friendly and cheerful girl. Whenever she saw us, she said, 'Good morning,' or 'Good afternoon.' She was a very nice girl who understood what was good or bad."
Before Kaede went missing, she called her mother using her cell phone and told her that she was walking in the neighborhood of her school. The mother and daughter agreed to meet each other near her school since Kaede's mother was on her way there for volleyball practice.
At 2:30 p.m., Kaede's mother called her cell phone because Kaede was late. But Kaede's cell phone was turned off and she could not reach her. The mother asked neighbors to help search for Kaede, but it was in vain. Kaede was missing.
Two classmates of Kaede told police that they saw a man speak to Kaede and drive off with her in his car.
Around 6 p.m., Kaede's mother reported her daughter missing to police. At 7:50 p.m., her cell phone rang but it was disconnected in a minute. At 8:04 p.m., she received an email on her cell phone originating from Kaede's cell phone. The email said, "I have your daughter." What shocked Kaede's mother tremendously was a picture of Kaede's dead body attached to the email. She fainted in shock.
Just after midnight, Kaede's body was found in a farm road, six kilometers away from her home, where few people walk by even during the day.
Kaede's cell phone which the killer used to send the email and the cruel picture was serviced by KDDI, one of the major Japanese telephone carriers, with a GPS system. The GPS system can trace the telephone signal and identify the location of its origin within a diameter of five meters. Until Kaede's mother's cell phone received the email, police had not requested KDDI to be alert to any calls from Kaede's cell phone, so they were unable to start tracing the email.
However, further investigation into Kaede's cell phone records has found that the call was made from within a 100-meter diameter of the area.
The attached photo of Kaede's dead body was not necessarily clear enough but police could discern that Kaede's body was lying on a white towel with certain patterns and her head was placed on a dark blue- or gray-color cushion.
The police made this picture public but it was said that there were other pictures which were said to depict a specific part of Kaede's body.
One source said, "It is as a matter of course that we do not disclose pictures that will be important evidence in our investigation and at the trial. In addition, those pictures of Kaede's body show scenes too cruel to publicize."
Shingo Takahashi, a psychiatrist and assistant professor of Toho University Medical School, pointed out the similarity to a boy who killed a child in 1997 in Kobe. The juvenile killer named himself "Sakakibara" and used that name in his letters to police.
Takahashi said, "Similar to Sakakibara's case in Kobe, the killer this time may be proud of his crime. Also, he must be a sadist. Sakakibara confessed that when he was committing his murders, he felt strong sexual ecstasy and masturbated. This killer wanted to fulfill his sexual sadistic desire. Their crimes were similar. They damaged the body after the killing. Also, both criminals abandoned the bodies in a place where people could easily find them, which means that they might have felt that their goal was accomplished and they stopped worrying that the bodies would be found."

Girls say ex-coach forced them to run nude
MATSUYAMA, Ehime Pref. (Kyodo) Eight girls claim the former coach of their local basketball team made them run naked as punishment in a school gymnasium in Shikokuchuo, Ehime Prefecture, city and prefectural officials said Friday.
The 49-year-old former coach, an official of the Shikokuchuo government, forced the students, aged 10 to 12, to run naked three times during summer vacation and after school in August and September, the officials said.
He also hit them on the head, and half the students have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, the officials said.
Some of the students claim they were filmed.
The former coach denied the allegations, the officials said.
"I did make them take off their (outer) pants but I did not make them naked," the former coach was quoted by the city as saying. "It was to infuse fighting spirit in them to win a competition and I did not consider them as sexual objects."

Densha Otoko wannabes kill middle-aged pedophile
OSAKA -- A middle-aged man died after being overpowered by train passengers at a station here for molesting a girl on a train on Tuesday morning, police said.
Local police are questioning the passengers who captured the man over details about the incident, and are trying to identify the man believed to be a 40-year-old company employee from Nishi-ku, Osaka.
The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. at JR Tennoji Station in Tennoji-ku, Osaka.
A 20-year-old junior college student grabbed a man by the shoulder shortly after the Hanwa Line rapid service train they were riding in stopped at the station, accusing him of molesting her, investigators said.
After the man began to run away, four male passengers, including two police officers who were on their way to work, chased him for some 50 meters before tackling him on the platform. He fell unconscious shortly afterwards, and later died.
