Saitama supermarket tries out online vegetable info system+
SAITAMA, Japan, Jan. 26_(Kyodo) _ A trial for a new information system in which a label attached to vegetables containing produce details is read by terminals and cellphones was successfully conducted Thursday at a Saitama Prefecture supermarket, a retail industry group said.
The system allows consumers to retrieve data embedded in such labels to learn about where a given vegetable was grown, which farmer cultivated it, how many agrochemicals were used and the route through which it has been distributed.
In the trial, one participant in the role of a farmer used a cellphone to input data, such as the date agrochemicals were sprayed on a vegetable, which were transmitted into a database in a computer. The information was retrieved from a label bearing a code called a QR code by a shopper using a terminal provided by the Saitama supermarket.
The data can be read also with a special cellphone. Consumers can talk to the system to register their opinions in the computer database.
"The new system seems like a great idea because I'm most concerned about the agrochemical residue on vegetables," said a 62-year-old woman who checked product information in the trial.
