Bean plants are a popular warm-weather crop for the home garden. As with all vegetables, they grow well in drained soil with loose texture, and plenty of sunlight. The soil pH should ideally be in the range of 5.8 to 6.0, but anything from 5.5 to 6.5 should work. They should be planted when all danger of frost is over, and the soil has been sufficiently warmed.

Seeds should be sowed one inch deep, about six inches apart. For a bean garden with an area of 100 feet, about 2 to 3 pounds of fertilizer should be used, scattered evenly. In dry weather, water the plants about once a week. The soil must not get dry while the beans are blooming.

Roots of bean plants are located near the surface of the soil. While pulling weeds, it is imperative not to dig too deeply, as the roots may sustain damage. One should always water the plants after fertilizing.

There are two main insects to worry about with regards to bean plants. The first is the spider mite, which looks like a spider and may cause yellow spots on leaves or create small webs. Another is the aphid, about an eighth of an inch long, which sucks plant juice. Before applying insecticide, you should consult a local gardening expert and follow all the directions carefully.

Beans can be harvested when they are about the size of a pencil. They must be pulled with care to ensure that the plant is not damaged. Beans that are not picked in time will become tough and wiry. If beans are picked properly, the plant will continue forming them for several weeks.

Fresh beans can add a lot to a meal. When cooked for a short time in boiling water, they are a nice source of vitamins A and C. They will keep in plastic bags or other containers in a refrigerator for about a week.
