So one of the biggest gaming companies overworks their staff. Thoughts? Do you think this will affect what games you play?

as a hobbyist games programmer I am fully aware of some of the crap that occurs in this industry, but this is possibly one of the largest whistle blowings I've seen on the issue thus far. 15 pages of replies, about half of which come from people who are in or people who know someone in the gaming industry. Everybody's bitching, and for good reason. Perhaps if enough people read about this sort of stuff, they might be more inclined to create a union. You don't have to all be working in the same company to make one, just the same industry, so I believe they really should give it a shot.

It's really sad how companies that employ "fans" of their products can abuse their employes, and there are so many wannabes they have no trouble hiring people willing to except crappy terms to follow their dreams, and then end up getting screwed over even more than they anticipated.

I never played their games in the first place anyway though, but still...

It's a pretty standard thing in the video game industry -- and to a lesser extent for software developers in general -- to overwork all of the employees involved in the development process. Playtesters at least get paid overtime, but actual programmers don't get anything for working 60-80+ hour weeks when crunch time comes solely because the marketing department has unrealistic expectations about how long the game will take, and rushed games tend to not be as good because programmers are human beings and oddly enough sleep deprivation generally reduces the quality of a person's work.
