yeah, so it's 3:45 am and i can't sleep.
Instead i'm sitting here listening to guided by voices and reading italo calvino. This, after three consecutive days of insomnia, has proven ineffective, if entertaining. So, adhering to standard protocol i whine about this on the intarwebz.

What do you do when you can't sleep?

> What do you do when you can't sleep?

Make myself something to drink & eat and get on the internet or keep myself occupied with something else that requires little intellectual effort.

Warm the room up. Heat always makes me sleepy.

6 Name: Random Anonymous 2005-07-02 15:33 ID:BJYpwoES

I toss and turn!

I've noticed that turning on a fan helps. The white noise is very calming.

Eat ice cream. Unfortunately this doesn't work right now, since I don't share my household with a freezer.

i'm an insomniac too, here is some shit that helps me sleep:

  • eating turkey (fatty food makes you sleepy, and turkey has small amounts of tryptophan in it which will relax you and put you in a good mood)
  • eating any very fatty food
  • smoking a joint
  • taking a dramamine/gravol/benadryl
  • quiet classical music (don't wear headphones!)
  • wearing socks to bed (warm feet and a cool room induce sleep)
  • white noise like a fan or air conditioner
  • blindfolding yourself
  • having someone talk/sing quietly
  • space out in front of the computer for an hour or so

hope i could help :)

caffeine makes me fall asleep really fast... which sort of sucks when i'm really tired and don't want to fall asleep...

It's 3:18 AM and I'm drinking coffee and reading 4-ch. I was totally going to make a topic about insomnia but then I realized someone already has. I need to get to work at 10:30, so, umm, I'm fucked.

Well, at least I have some rice in cold water ready for making breakfast. Suddenly I wish I had some turkey and a doobie.

I am also drinking coffee right now. Couldn't survive without coffee. It's about 2 AM here.

I didn't sleep much last night. Found out a good friend of my ex died the other day. Cannot talk to her about it. A close relative of mine died the other week. Cannot talk to her about that, either.

That kind of silence makes me uncomfortable, so I couldn't sleep. I browsed 2ch last night a lot.

I think you need to talk about it, even if you started a thread and talked about it here at 4-ch, at least you can get some things off your chest.

It's a personal struggle. I don't know whether it would help to make it public. I'll think about it.

Some crazy dude at work threatened me with a knife and flashed a scanning laser in my eye. I then proceeded to go home and sleep like a baby. Maybe there's something about the thought of being dead that puts me to sleep.

Maybe it puts you to comfort that you know that one day you'll be dead? hehe

Well... you know, we're all anonymous, here. Mostly.

dont force yourself i you cant sleep.. even if youre tired..
if you cant fall asleep, watch TV, play videogames.. internet and/or go take a walk and get raped in the middle of the night..

no, seriously.. when your body really needs sleep.. it will fall asleep.. if you haven't slept for like 1 week.. seek a doctor.

I think after 1 week it's a bittle too late.
I know of people who have gone into schizopsychotic phases after 4 days and nights of staying awake without even taking a nap.
It's seriously not healthy.

melatoin pills used to work for me. It kind of has the same effect as eating a big turkey sandwich.

21 Name: Random Anonymous 2005-08-26 05:16 ID:c2GfM4Cj

reading a book till i can't open my eyes helps me. other times, for me, doing physical stuff makes me sleepy like exercise, running, sex, masturbation. haha its true sometimes i get sso sleepy right after i have sex. so my recomendation is reading a book or doing physical things

22 Name: Random Anonymous 2005-08-26 07:30 ID:s0kpkJmn

The physical exercise will have to be really exhausting, though. Otherwise you'll warmed up for bed which would be the opposite effect you wanted to have. So a few stretches before going to sleep won't help.

That works better for NEET people than for neat people, I think...

I tried that during the time I was unemployed and came up with very unconventional--but very effective--schedules like sleeping 03:00-09:00 one day, then 11:00-21:00 the next day, then 05:30-13:00 the day after that, and 16:30-12:00 following that... Good stuff, both natural and comfortable, but totally unsuitable for the work world. Alas.

24 Name: Random Anonymous 2005-08-26 11:18 ID:s0kpkJmn

About sleeping schedules, esp. for NEET people, there's this nifty thing where you get to sleep just 2-5 hours in a 24-hour-cycle but still will feel as refreshed as with your usual consecutive 8 hours:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyphasic_sleep

"Polyphasic sleep (also known as the Uberman sleep schedule and Dymaxion Sleep) is a sleep pattern specification intended to compress sleep time to 2-5 hours daily. This is achieved by spreading out sleep into short (around 20-45 minute) naps throughout the day. This allows for more waking hours with relatively high alertness."

time to resurrect this thread for my own wily boredom-alleviation purposes

so far i've tried reading bill & ted comics, watching 10 episodes of honey & clover, eating, wanking, drinking whiskey

but yet i can't sleep, and now i actually don't want to sleep anymore since i'm getting really into honey & clover

Alledgely hot milk with whiskey in it is supposed to be sleep inducing. Or so my friend claims.

Instead of wanking, try just thinking about sex. I find this often helps shut down my higher brain functions, and puts me to sleep.

I should warn you thought that this will lead to your train of thought going astray as you are falling asleep, and the results can be a bit weird.

Woah, that usually just gets me more awake, thinking of sex.
And usually leads to me fwapping off.
