[RANT] Thoughts on Michael Bolton [Pretty damn Boring] (9)

So here's the jig, I want you all to imagine you're in my steps. Well actually the steps I was in about half an hour ago, the description of which follows this period.

I'm sitting in my living room, if you want you can try this later to try to get better into character but unless you have a laptop i don't recommend trying this now, unless ofcourse the computer you're using is in the living room, in which case whatever. Anyway, i'm there, sitting in a nice weathered leather couch, wearing a half-unbuttoned shirt, nice semi-new jeans, levis infact and just spacing out in front of the tv. I switched to one of the two Icelandic channels i pick up.

Note: if you can listen to something icelandic, bjork, sigurros, the sugarcubes or something you should, to give you a better sense of where i'm coming from with this.

The show that's running is some semi-news related programme, nothing special about it, i'm just watching it to kill time. EXCEPT up pops Michael fucking Bolton, much to my dismay. Many words have been said on the subject of Michael Boltons immense badness and I don't really feel like adding to them, but if you like you can imagine a sentence between this one and the next, possibly a paragraph, detailing just why you, me and everyone else should hate him for his 'contribution' to the sum total of human wisdom. Now, this next thing that happened came completely out of the blue, caught me completely by surprise, like a thief from a clear sky if you will.

Now, I realize some of you may be wondering whether there is any point to this rant, possibly even thinking about skipping to the end. Well I assure you reader, the final point would be completely lost without a full understanding of the circumstances that led to me doing what i did.

Anyway, I did NOT change the channel, in fact i kept watching for a good five minutes or so. Maybe it was just a case of extreme apathy, or maybe it was some higher force that made me watch an interview with 'The Boltster'. Now, the interview was just a shameless plug for some concert he's doing here n' stuff. But, about halfway into it, He starts talking about his music, and all of a sudden turns non-dull. Now, the following isn't exactly verbatim or anything (my literary gland is fried after reading too much Calvino) but the gist is there.

MB: I just to play rock music you know, i'd play with Ozzy Osborne and [some other old rock group] you know. But when you start getting famous for your ballads there's no going back.

Reporter Person: Oh, how so?

MB: well, I can't go anywhere without strangers, all around me singing "When a man loves a woman", there's just no going back. It just goes to show that romantic songs sell much better than rock songs.

[the above is all said in kindof a rueful tone, like he regrets ever having written these songs, eventhough he's filthy fucking rich for it]

RP: [inane comment, probably quoting some of his lyrics]

MB: [witty comeback, to show he's an intelligent and funny guy]

So I'm watching this and all of a sudden I realize I kinda pity him, i mean, everywhere you go you have to listen to the same five songs, fifteen times a day for the rest of your life (quoth sagat, kinda). I actually found myself zapping him with some good ole pity flavored good kharma, despite this being Michael Bolton. Now i realize that noone forced him to write these songs, he's dug his own grave, but still.

Now the point of it all is: Is he actually a victim of circumstances that have spiralled out of control or does he deserve nothing but the shit he gets? Was he even possibly appealing to naive people like me to harvest some good kharma, to keep him from keeling over completely due to evilness?

peace out

I can see your point. That's always the danger of being an entertainer - to get pigeonholed as THIS type of musician, or THAT kind of actor... even if you want to do other things, you're never able to escape that typecast role. Think about the main cast of the original Star Wars movies - other than Harrison Ford, how many of them managed to have any kind of real career afterwards? That's why I'd rather own a dozen silver mines in South Africa than be a movie star.

In other news, is this the new Yoshinoya Rant?

That stuff about Ozzy isn't just bullshit, I hear Micheal Bolton actually used to be in a metal band.
