At about 10pm last night - a discussion channel for ##avian-flu opened up on irc.freenode.net - The Channel operator ChrisBradley has had some interesting success collecting information regarding news and government information regarding the pandemic to come.

The idea for the channel was given to ChrisBradley by a user called ShakeSpeareFan00 who works with ##wikimedia on several projects in action. He noticed that there was a need for the channel on irc.freenode.net and ChrisBradley opened the channel at his request.

Topic for ##avian-flu is: http://mavericksdeck.schtuff.com/avian_flu_faq_and_links - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avian_flu - Wikinews : http://tinyurl.com/bgt9x - http://tinyurl.com/98u7b - Welcome to Avian Flu! The Freenode Avian Info Channel

Frankly, who opened the channel is pretty irrelivant. Usernames are not necessary.

Well, that's incorrect. On the Internet, usernames are the same as regular names. If this were a story that took place offline, then you can bet it would have the founder's name in it somewhere, so I don't see how this is any different.

We are kinda elitist against names on here. Don't take it too seriously.

They should just make a channel called #the-next-big-epidemic-scare or something

Yeah, but you can't just go onto IRC as "Anonymous". You need a nick because it identifies you to the server. Do you mean to tell me that because of that feature/option/whatever, IRC should be considered not worthy of our time?

I think that >>7 is trying to point out that the argument at hand is that the event happened is important, not the person who created it. The fact that it was created is significant, and perhaps it would matter who created it if it were something of social significane (president of x, prime minister of y, so forth). The "article" of >>1 does a significant amount to promote ChrisBradley and ShakesSpearFan00. No one cares that they specifically (two alias) created it, but rather that it is there.

I'm sick of all these "epidemics". SARS, Avian Flu, etc...

The whole second paragraph in >>1 is a waste of space.
That's the sort of thing you have in the "About" section at a site or irc-bot.

It's not as much an issue of using names too much, as redunant information that isn't really interesting for the majority of the readers.

If you want to advertise something, you state what it has to offer, not the history of the place, unless it has advertisement value through that the history of it gives some sort of additional value to the "consumers".

there are no epidemics. it's all a plot by the government to keep people busy while it goes about its insidious business

People do a pretty good job of keeping themselves busy, though. No plots required.
