Should I learn Arabic, Japanese or Korean? (43)

So, here's the deal:

Situation:

-I'm currently at the chapter 9 of Japanese for Busy People.

-I want to study Arabic, I have a textbook for it.

-But I also want to study Korean...

Own thoughts:

Arabic:
Pros - Interesting and important language in today's world, helps understand our Muslim neighbors.
Cons - Just like Chinese, it has many varieties. The spoken language in Morocco differs a lot from the one in Syria. The literary language is good only if you want to read the Qur'an in Arabic.

Japanese:
Pros - I can say more on 4chan than just "kawaii". Plus, Japan is VERY sugoi!
Cons - Craploads of kanji. I already know some of it and the hiragana and katakana syllabaries PLUS I'd never even dare to say "romanji" (hello, it's roomaji FFS..). Japanese is not that important in today's world, though.

Korean:
Pros - I like the language and genuinely want to learn it. It's the easiest one since you don't have to learn craploads of hanja in order to manage.
Cons - Like learning French: where are you going to need it unless you don't move to the damn country in question or start to teach the language yourself?

Conclusion:

Help me...

When the hell will you ever use Arabic? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but not much of any entertainment value comes out of said countries. Japanese or Korean are far better choices, from an economic and entertainment perspective.

I would go with Chinese, Korean, Japanese, German, and Russian.

If you only have one choice, Chinese. Unlike all the idiots taking Spanish thinking they're gonna get an awesome job communicating with poor immigrants, you'll be talking to Chinese businessmen and very often highly educated Chinese immigrants. One of the waitresses at the Chinese restaurant I go to all the time has a doctorate in Mandarin teaching and was a professor in Beijing. Excepting the Cuban diaspora a couple of decades ago, how many Mexican doctors do you find in the US?

  • Arabic would only work if you're interested in joining the armed forces. Then, it's an instant win for the most part. Even though there are a lot of dialects, knowing the source language is the ace in the hole.
  • As much as I love Japanese, it's not worth learning for the most part. Japanese businessmen readily learn English if they're in international business.
  • Korean... well, works for an armed forces wannabe, I guess. There's a lot of Korean immigrants too, although they like the Chinese are often more educated (it does take money to immigrate overseas). Korean's supposed to be pretty easy, though, easier than Japanese and much easier than Chinese.

Chinese...I haven't even thought about it. It's an interesting language as well but does have the same old "craploads of this and that" problem.

You could get a job at your goverment and such.

Korean. Its FAR easier than any of the other lanuages you're considering. You could probably get to a profiecient level quickly enough that you could take up study in the two other languages you left behind.

Plus, the chicks are hot 8)

I'd reccomend against japanese just because it would make you look like a weeaboo faggot, and you'd probably lose interest after awhile.

Arabic can be fun, but the cript is hard. On the plus side, you'll be able to find work as a translator incredibly easy.

Learn Chinese first, then Japanese will be a walk in the park as you will mostly understand the written language even if you can't read it.

>>18 is DQN.

Learn Japanese. Japan has cultural exports that everyone should be getting hot about. China has nothing. Korea sucks. AFAIK it is impossible to learn Arabic fluently if you are not a native.

Don't go by if it'll be useful or not.

Learn the one you want to learn the most.

21 Name: 20 : 2006-03-09 20:17 ID:Heaven

Also, since you're in chapter 9 of Japanese for Busy People, that's probably the one you want to learn the most. Otherwise you'll be in chapter 9 of "Korean for Busy People."

>Japanese is not that important in today's world, though.

I think moreso than Korean. Arabic... maybe because of recent events, but not really, unless you want to go over there.

Do you feel like learning the kanji?

As you're already on chapter 9, you'll probably have an advantage there, also.

22 Name: Anonymous : 2006-03-09 22:40 ID:Heaven

I think Korean's kind of neat just because of the writing system. It's too bad they're so... you know

23 Name: Anonymous : 2006-03-10 14:59 ID:FQTemfXY

So, just how horrible is all the kanji-learning? Scare stories have it that you won't be able to read a newspaper in 7 years, and you'll still need a dictionary.

learn japanese...did you forget about all the products and things they have?

If your first language is American English,
Learning Chinese or Korean is not as difficult
as learning Japanese, just because you don't
have to improve your manner or civility in
dealing with the Chinese or the Koreans in General.
Learn Japanese and not learning the Japanese
social manners, you are probably not fully
comunnicating with the Japanese. You will be
just an angry person without much of achievement.

Korean sucks. It is such a whiny sounding language and even if you go to Korea to exercise the language, you'll just be interacting with Koreans who want to prove they have a bigger penis than everyone out there combined.

yeah korean is too gutteral and useless really. chinese or japanese is usefull especially chinese
