Has this come out yet? My local shop sold out a week ago after underestimating demand, and when I went back they said it wasn't out in the major channels yet.

Translation changes I've come across:

  • The joke with Yotsuba's dad's profession was changed to a simple "Translator / Train-spotter" joke - we'll see how that works out in chapter 24 ...
  • Pants Man -> Boxer Man ... =(
  • GAO -> ROAR ... =(

5 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-07-16 14:52 ID:EG8w7Hvt

> GAO -> ROAR ... =(

That's just translating it so that English speakers know what it means. Us manga otaku's should know what "gao!" means.

6 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-07-16 19:22 ID:tdIpAQ2M

"Pants man" was always awkward. And "GAO" is "ROAR" in English, although personally I might have used something like "GRARR".

VOLUME 2 IS OUT!

The new girl is kind of a bitch.
Yotsuba & revenge is brilliant beyond words.
I'm really starting to wonder what's with Asagi and her mother.

>Well he wasn't wearing PANTS on his head, he was wearing UNDERPANTS!

Depends on which side of the atlantic you live on. ;)

I wondered more at the change in Fuuka's reaction to the whole thing. From a "haha, this is crazy" to the somewhat angrier "what kind of idiotic game is this?".

11 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-07-22 11:24 ID:badZO6Zk

> "what kind of idiotic game is this?".

BATTLETOADS Yeah, sounds like the translator does not have a good command of language... What's his name anyway? My copies should be shipping in a few days.

14 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-07-24 23:50 ID:7CxY3HMS

Well, it's just "ahahaha baka da...", which I'd read as "Ahahahah, idiots..." or "Ahahahah, an idiot...", literally. I guess it might mean "this is dumb" too, but to my admittedly untrained eye, it seems more likely to refer to the people than the situation.

15 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-07-25 18:39 ID:i8wJo98X

In the last chapter where they talk about how Okinawa makes you think of nothing, it seems like there's a pun that got lost somewhere.

Well, after reading through it, some of it was better than the fan translations, some of it was not as good. Overall, good enough. I liked how they handled Yotsuba's mispronounciations (except for "Asage", but that might be a lost cause), for instance. Momotato's translation of Jumbo's outburst when he met Asagi was more awkward, but in context it worked better that way.

But what's with the "Fuka"? "Fūka" or "Fuuka" are correct, but "Fuka" is just WRONG.

20 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-08-04 18:53 ID:wq6fr/dd

as long as ADV brings us the yotsuba action figure i'll be a happy camper.

21 Name: Stiltzman 2005-08-05 17:55 ID:p3j23lsW

What is Yotsuba's dad's job?

22 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-08-05 18:15 ID:u0FCLErU

>>21
Translator, why?

23 Name: Stiltzman 2005-08-05 19:20 ID:p3j23lsW

So why would it be problem that he is a translator in Chapter 24, or does it have to do with trainspotting?

24 Name: 2005-08-05 19:56 ID:Heaven

In chapter 7, Yotsuba says his job is "Konnyakuya" (Konnyaku chef) instead of "Honnyakuya" (Translator). So in chapter 24, Fuuka asks him questions about making Konnyaku...

That bit isn't going to make a whole lot of sense now they've replaced it with "Train-spotter".

25 Name: Stiltzman 2005-08-06 04:58 ID:p3j23lsW

I would have to say that is the problem with adapting anything that isn't completed, but I am sure they will manage something or let rewrite histroy.

26 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-08-06 07:10 ID:etWS6Rot

Well, I don't think that a translation has to be literal to be good, it just has to transport the meaning of the original into another language and preserve the original consistency while doing that. I don't think you can do that if you constantly ignore all the puns in the original.

The problem now is that when Fuuka asks Yotsuba's dad later, the question is clearly about food/diet, I don't know how they would be able to rewrite "trainspotter" into having something to do with food... I fear that they will just completely rewrite the whole joke, so that it doesn't refer to Yotsuba's earlier mistake anymore - I feel that either solution would be a loss, though.

44 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-09-28 08:05 ID:Mi0N9k77

I don't know if I was trolling. I think it's extremely silly when white people acting like overprotective parents of Japanese culture make a big deal over miniscule shit. I'm just a bit cynical about it, you might call it trolling.

The American manga industry follows the revised Hepburn romanization system, which is basically the standard in American publishing. Hence Fūka over Fuuka. Obviously, the editors got lazy and didn't put the line over the u. No one writes animé anymore, why isn't fandom complaining about that?

45 Name: 44 2005-09-28 08:18 ID:Mi0N9k77

I mean, if you want to discuss the inconsisten ways in which they use circumflexes and what have you, I guess that would be a worthwhile discussion. But no one here is doing that, all I hear is, "oh noes the u is missing."

Also, make sure to anally rape me about that while you're at it.

47 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-09-28 12:47 ID:Heaven

The problem is that a lot of us know how to read Japanese words, and when you have to continously mentally correct the words you read, it kind of detracts from the enjoyment of reading. I'd pronounce "Fuuka" and "Fuka" differently, and I don't need the cognitive dissonance of continously having to imagine that one is actually the other.

48 Name: Random Manga Otaku 2005-09-28 14:07 ID:Mi0N9k77

>>47
Okay, fair enoigh, but how do you pronounce Fuuka? When I see the word "Fuka" in the context of a Japanese comic book, I pronounce it it "foo-kah." Are you saying that's wrong?

49 Name: Ichigo Pie!5ouPkmz/WI 2005-09-28 19:06 ID:/0+H0WtD

>No one writes animé anymore, why isn't fandom complaining about that?

Because there's no romanisation system that transliterates メ as mé. As such, the spelling 'animé' has always been wrong. I'm not sure why people spelled it this way, but it's probably either to prevent people from pronouncing it all English-like or because they thought it was derived from the French word animé.

>When I see the word "Fuka" in the context of a Japanese comic book, I pronounce it it "foo-kah." Are you saying that's wrong?

Considering the Japanese 'u' isn't pronounced like the English 'oo', I'd say so.
As for the difference between Fuuka and Fuka... 'Fu' takes one mora, 'Fuu' takes two morae. In other words, it takes twice as long to pronounce. Considering that Fuka has two morae and Fuuka three, that makes a lot of difference.

I just finished Vol 3, so I suppose I should give a review of sorts.

First of all, the scan quality has gone down the shitter compared to previous volumes. Every line is all jaggies, even the panel borders. The only things that look normal are the english text and one page near the end, where Yotsuba does the balloon fishing.

The translation is overall quite good. IIRC, the main trouble spot anticipated for this volume was Ena's coupon. I think they handled it pretty well.
Asagi:Wow... but did she need to make it so detailed?
Fuuka:Yeah! The only need she should be worried about is kneading his shoulders!
The other bit was the comparisons of the elephant/fireworks to Jumbo/florists. The second one reads as it should but it's unfortunate they used different wording for the first, so the connection isn't as obvious.

63 Name: !WAHa.06x36 2005-10-10 00:52 ID:C4rCWnEA

> First of all, the scan quality has gone down the shitter compared to previous volumes. Every line is all jaggies, even the panel borders. The only things that look normal are the english text and one page near the end, where Yotsuba does the balloon fishing.

It's not scan quality, it's just that the people doing the print work are utter idiots.

It sure looks a lot like they sent greyscale images to the printer, and the print people didn't give a fuck and just printed it. The rasterizing then made everything look like shit.

XXXholic volume 4 was the same. I was going to mail the idiots to yell at them, but they didn't even have a customer relations mail address.

Really, that kind of mistake is so pathetic, it makes me want to cry.
