What songs have you found that you prefer to the original version?

NOTE: THIS THREAD IS ABOUT PERSONAL PREFERENCES, NOT SOME SORT OF UNIVERSAL TRUTH.

A few of the songs I prefer listening to, even though I might like the original a lot too:

  • "Go west" by the Petshop boys rather than by the Village People
  • "Boulevard of Broken Songs" by Dean Gray, rather than "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day
  • "Sakuranbo kiss" by Scanning Around rather than Kotoko (hardrocker/metal/whatever version of a song which in the original was a cutesy, loli-voiced song)
  • "Paint it black" by Statemachine rather than any of the other covers I've heard or the original. Though Nightwish did pretty well too.
  • "Hurricane 2000" by The Scorpions & Berlin Philharmonic Orcestra, rather than the original.
  • All of the songs that were on the Black Sabbath tribute CD "Nativity In Black II", I was rather heartbroken when I bought a CD with the original songs two years later, and discovered that I vastly preferred the tribute CD over the original songs.
  • Several Weird Al songs.

  • Strand - Never fail and Noise Process - dead world are largely better in the Dismantled version
  • baby fox made a remix of Cujo's Northstar, which still is the only allowed remix of any Amon Tobin track there is. period.
  • amon tobin's remix of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Grief
  • the dryft remix of Gridlock's Enzyme
  • Marin Marais' Folies are by far the best work on that material.
  • François Dagincour wrote a lovely edition of Couperin LG's La Couperin
  • the Orphx version of Er is better than both mlada fronta's and that of Zonk't, and Tarmvred does a better job than all of the previous.

Of course, all of those would be totally worthless without knowing the original in my opinion.

Hm..

  • Johnny Cash's version of "One" by U2.
  • Paul Anka's version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana.
  • Iron & Wine's version of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service.

Actually, most of the time I prefer covers that totally reinvent the song into a different genre better than the originals.
