Since the old thread got lost in the server crash, here is a new one.
Discuss online translation software, preferably English <--> Japanese!

Excite
http://excite.co.jp/world/english/
http://excite.co.jp/world/english/web/
My site of choice, pretty good!
Uses BizLingo

@nifty
http://www.nifty.com/globalgate/
Fairly accurate, works with popups
Uses AMIKAI

AltaVista
http://world.altavista.com/
Babel Fish is DQN
Uses SYSTRAN

Jeffrey's Japanese<->English Dictionary Server
http://www.solon.org/cgi-bin/j-e/jis/dict
Excellent dictionary, kanji-lookup pages and many more things! A+!
Currently down, but there are mirrors linked.

I use BizLingo all the time, but the makers really need to work on their English phrase constructs. It's often hard to understand the meaning of the translated sentence. Also, it ignores the "?". And sometimes it skips entirely the whole sentence - no romaji, no dangling kana letters, no nothing. >_<;
And it doesn't stop when there is a "・", that weird period that is hanging in mid-air.

Some technical problem erased my post as well as >>6

Mine was something like "Geeez, excite now translates スレ with "Thread" instead "Sre", which impresses me greatly!"

@nifty translates the big version of orz into a U.S. text version :v

Well, http://excite.co.jp/world/english/ still translates スレ as Sre.
I guess you mean the web version?

BTW what with all the "u" omissions? Bad programming choice in my opinion.

Oh and the programmers should do something about that "furnace" bug.
I often see "and the furnace" in the translations.
綺麗にしろよ -> "It keeps beautiful and the furnace."
xろ -> "x furnace"
"ろ" is a furnace? It doesn't make sense.

ろ→炉 = furnace
I'll repost that link that got deleted.

At 2ch, sometimes 炉 stands for loli.

I just noticed that sometimes it does translate it as Sre and sometimes as thread.
I haven't found out when it decided on what translation.
I didn't mean the web version, btw. Both should use the same technology, anyway.

>BTW what with all the "u" omissions? Bad programming choice in my opinion.

On the contrary, I'm pretty sure the majority of all "u":s in katakana spellings of English words are extraneous. Dropping them is definitely more likely to give a correct transliteration than leaving them in, if you're working on the assumption that words written in katakana are English words. This is a good assumption on most serious websites, not so good on silly internet subculture pages.

From what I can see, 炉 is never used alone, always with another kanji.
My JWPce dictionary gives no result for 炉 alone.
Furnace is 火炉【かろ】.

Ha, I just noticed Excite strips the O from TO as well.
トライト [=not a real word] becomes "Torait".
And if Excite didn't translate it, ライト [=light] would become "Rait/Lait".

I've used animelab's dictionary and Translator(for kanji-> Romaji) for help translating songs I have the lyrics to, and manga.
Unfortunately, it is slow and hasn't been updated in a while.

I'm also starting to use J-talk for some stuff

和英/英和辞典 - Japanese⇔English Dictionary (which is mentioned in >>1)
has changed its location. One of the mirrors out there is:

Think Excite cares? You put your ro at the end of the sentance (before of course particles like yo and da and ze and zo), it'll just change it to 炉.

I have the ATLAS (=Excite's engine) program at home and even when disabling all instances of 炉 in the database, it still translates RO as furnace. >_<

18 名前: Sling!XD/uSlingU 2005-06-10 16:19 ID:Heaven

Ah, I found it. There was a "ろ" = furnace in the database. I disabled it and finally I don't get that "and the furnace" anymore. Whee!

On the other hand, it now translates 綺麗にしろよ as just "In beauty". Ouch...
