"Islanders on tiny Tuvalu in the South Pacific last week saw the future of global warming and rising sea levels, as extreme high tides caused waves to crash over crumbling sea-walls and flood their homes.

Castro accuses Bush of planning to assassinate Venezuelan (President) Hugo Chávez
"If Hugo Chávez is assassinated, the responsibility will fall entirely on the president of the United States," stated Castro last morning, at the [conclusion?] of an international economic conference in Havana.

Dictator-in-the-making Chávez is one of Castro's best buddies. Chávez was also the first democratically-elected leader to meet with Saddam after the first Gulf War.

An economic conference in Havana... Right.

"Chavez, a fierce critic of US President George Bush and the US-led war in Iraq, on Saturday brushed aside US opposition to the agreement to buy 100,000 automatic rifles and about 40 military helicopters from Moscow.

"One has to ask whether there was transparency in the invasion of Iraq. The world knows President Bush lied openly about Iraq having chemical weapons," Chavez said.

"They keep on bombing cities, killing children, they have become a terrorist state," he said."

"On Thursday, the US State Department repeated long-standing concerns about the shipment of 100,000 automatic rifles and a number of helicopters.
It accused Venezuela of starting an arms race.

The Venezuelan ambassador to Russia, Carlos Mendoza Pottella, described such comments as absurd.
He said the country was simply replacing its obsolete weaponry."

"Fact or fiction? Chávez plot on trial
Charges of a plot to kill Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez may be full of holes, but they illustrate the type of accusations being made these days."
"The inconsistencies lead some to believe that the government invented the assassination plot to distract the public from Chávez's waning popularity at the time, while raising his profile as an assailed leftist revolutionary."
