Is this DVD player worth it? (10)

There's an ad in one paper here in which a DVD player is offered for €39.99. It's a SEG DVD-Player 5.1, including the following features

  • Dolby Digital AC3 optical
  • MP3
  • CD-R/RW
  • VCD
  • CD
  • SVCD
  • JPEG Picture-CD
  • Remote control

Is this thing worth it? I often hear it basically comes down to what kind of DVD-drive is in that thing but I have no clue about that in general nor in this particular case. Anybody want to help me out here?

Probably not, but it would be for my Dad, anyway, and I doubt he will buy more than the occasional DVD sold here on the local market. I don't think region codes would be much of a problem.

My main concern here is whether the drive itself should be considered crappy or not.

When it comes to DVD players, you tend to get what you pay for. My family had a cheapo, and it broke on them after about a year. I'm planning on buying them a good one for Christmas, and I'm thinking of spending at least $70 (€54) on it.

Also, just as you mentioned, you have to ask yourself if you dad is ever going to use features like Picture CD before you let them wow you. I know that the only thing my family is going to watch on their DVD player is frickin' DVDs, and only ones from our region.

Why do you sage your own threads? You even saged >>1...

I just listed the features as I have them in the catalog, there's nothing more and nothing less on the ad. So, just for completion's sake.

It's in my cookie and for most of the time it isn't neccessary to bump a thread to the very top just because you choose to reply to it, so I don't take it out.

My approach to saging is more of a 2ch than a 4chan approach.

hk0: Again, why get features like that if their dad is never going to use it?

I just spent $80 on a Panasonic DVD-S27 for my family (ssh... don't tell them). From the reviews I read online, it's a quality player and the price is right.

If your dad does not always buy the DVDs, you should consider divx etc. support.
If not, it can show dvds, so why not. I dont remember using my dvd player for anything else (mp3, jpg etc..). Well once to try it out, but thats it.
