Midi controller help (3)

Sorry if this isn't tagged properly as it's my first time posting here.

I recently bought a midi controller for my pc and somehow forgot to research how it will actually work with my pc. I know it will be plug and play, but does that mean when the controller is on I can just play away and here it, or do I need some software for that? All I really want to do is plug my midi controller in, choose what I want it to sound like and play. Any thoughts, or am I screwed?

Just in case anyone's wondering:
The controller is a M-audio Keystation 49e and I'm running Win XP Pro with a Creative Audigy Soundblaster 2 audio card.

Thanks for any help.

I've got a Keystation 49e as well. It supports a USB connector, so no need to go through your sound card. I don't believe it needed any drivers for basic functionality, but you might want to check M-Audio's web site.

Do you have a host program to actually play the sounds, like Cakewalk? All the MIDI controller provides is an interface- you need some kind of synthesizer to get sound out of it.

Yeah.. stupid me forgot to install one of the programs that came with the Soundblaster (I think it was the SoundFont something or other). After installing that I had what I needed. Thanks much for the help though.
