Death Note is shit (89)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-04-12 03:59 ID:KDYqwa1t

I don't want to start any flamewars or whatever, since I don't care that much, but what the fuck is all this hype about Death Note? A few things to note:
o I've only read a chapter or two of the manga
o I've only seen the first episode
It was so repugnant that I couldn't bother to sit through a second one. Some cliche, dumbass main character that there's no way in hell I could ever give a shit about, some random shinigami (a shinigami? In an anime? That's not cliche at all!) who is also a dumbass. And likes apples. Ha ha ha that's so crazy and random! A shinigami eating apples! Ha ha ha! Wait, no, I forgot for a second that I'm not a fourteen year old girl.
And the crux of it all: the fucking scene where he's writing in the Death Note. Dramatic music playing. It's all dark, except for the curiously-bright lamp. OH HOLY SHIT HE'S WRITING NAMES! OH HOLY SHIT RANDOM PEOPLE ARE DYING! All the while he's sitting in his fucking room, by himself, waving the pen around in the air dramatically after he writes names. What the fuck?

The only reason I watched Death Note in the first place was because L is the only male anime character over the age of ~14 that makes me want to start masturbating. And he doesn't even show up until later on.

Does this show get better? Is it all ridiculous bullshit, or just the first episode? Why does everyone like it so much? Can someone post some L hentai? And, finally, can someone recommend me some anime that doesn't involve giant robots, teenagers, schoolgirls, dumbass "romance", sports, tentacle monsters, demons, shinigamis, magic, etc.? Something that somehow manages to avoid the bullshit cliches that make most anime unwatchable. (That's not to say there aren't some good animes that make use of those cliches. I like Evangelion and Gundam.) Only thing I've ever seen that hasn't involved any of that is Haibane Renmei, and it was only thirteen episodes.

I know I'm not putting forward a particularly original opinion or saying anything all that new, but Death Note's so popular it confuses me. Since there seems to be a Death Note following on 4-ch I figured I'd at least try to get someone to enlighten me about what all the fuss is.

And magical girl is the ass end of anime. Shounen is just close.

Death Note had my attention for about 4 episodes and then I kinda stopped watching but yeah...Darker than Black seems pretty good.

mm that's kinda hard you eliminate at least 90% of anime, i recommend Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai

>>3 sorry but Mahou Shoujo>>>>>> Shounen (you at least get to fap with Magical girls)
>>9 it's a good anime, but i didn't like it, i personally found the teacher disgusting, lame and stupid, and there were some holes in the anime ie, one episode the the intelligent girl hates onizuka, onizuka convinces her, and the other instead of following or at least saying what happened after, starts another shit, and there isn't a major character delevopment (only the schoolkids becoming friends of onizuka)... but well that's my opinion, it's a fairly good anime, and i think everyone should watch it

Nice try, troll.

Although I love Death Note because it almost seinen-like; it's very different from the other Jump series. In fact Jump's motto is "friendship, victory, and courage." Death Note doesn't really fit the motto, especially the friendship part. lol

Moe anime is the ass end of anime. EX: Lucky Star, Hidamari Sketch, Maburaho, etc,.

Troll, a good anime is Monster. In fact, I don't really think anime will have a lot of what you want; try manga. Good manga: Homunculus, Monster, Sanctuary, basically anything by Iou Kuroda. Basically "Seinen" stuff.

Hidamari Sketch is underrated.

I agree, Death Note (manga ver) is a little over-hyped, but honestly, if you have the patience to sit through Light's mind wandering here and there, then it turns out to be an interesting series (I like it, though it tends to give me a headache sometimes).

I can't offer my opinion on the anime though (haven't seen it yet), but it seems like Light "talking" to himself would get old after an episode or two.

18 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-05-25 01:35 ID:xPfVAWpD

personally I don't see the appeal in death note. I know exactly where the story was heading by the 1st volume, not awful but not my cup of tea. Probably the fact that my sister in law is a weeabo DN fangirl just puts me off it completely.

I read death note before it was widely popular, and i enjoyed it. I, personally, had never really seen anything like it before, and plus i'm a fan of the artist. Well I enjoyed it at least until Mello and Near came in, after that it sucked donkey balls. I've never seen such a terrible ending.

Never heard of Hataraki Man, but I love Lupin II and Studio 4c.

it makes fags feel like they're smart and girls jack off to thinking about L sucking Light's cock. the manga is a little better. yeah, best thing about the series is L.

26 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-06-19 14:33 ID:Heaven

But the manga totally doesn't have the hilariously homoerotic bits in episode 25! It's clearly inferior!

27 Name: Aerith : 2007-06-21 01:05 ID:8UZM+nVr

>>26

Oh yeah, I definitely didn't like that scene either the way they put it. L's character was given more "value" because of that, since they made that like he was so important like a "Jesus". Thus the washing of the feet. Just didn't like the way they did it.

As for the anime, overall I liked it, but mostly because of the first arc, which was really intelligent.

The beauty of Death Note (manga, at least; can't speak for the anime) is how FUCKING AWESOME a mystery story it turns into. If you read the manga, past the first few chapters to where Light starts to get himself in too deep, watching Light and L go back and forth playing the fool on each other and try to stay one-up really gets you hooked. It's really hard to just stop partway through, you just want to keep reading even though it totally scares the shit out of you. It really is just about the most fucked up thing ever, and you don't want to keep reading, but you can't stop—kind of like a Stephen King novel, only a hundred times better.

And by the way, the live-action movies are also a whole other level of amazing.

51 Name: iruscom : 2007-11-08 17:51 ID:yeDyM0W1

I think that the reason so many people enjoy watching Death Note is not because of the concept of how he kills people or the relationships he has with his surroundings. The reason we enjoy this anime is because of the suspense that draws you in for each episode. Also along with the suspense, one with a more philosophical mentality would be conflicted with the ethics of man. If we were presented with the God complex, how would we react? The most interesting thing is the ending...

SPOILER

The ethics and morals of man are really low. Even to the very end of this series, Light does not hold back. He does not change his mind. He, just like the majority of man in this world has a sadistic side to their personality. What catches our attention is the fact that man is that evil. While viewing this series I feel that most of us thought he would eventually get caught or just give up. BUT! to our surprise [which in reality we shouldn't have been surprised] man is that evil and man will take ahold of that power and never let it go. I just proves that the ethics and morals of man are horrible. We may put on a facade [just as Light does with everyone else when he pretends not to be Kira] but really the hearts of man will take power and run with it.

>>1
To the original poster:
I suggest that you just get through about 5 episodes. Consider the ideas I have posted and try not to focus on the fact that he writes names in a book [which I will admit is a lame way to kill people]. Focus on the ethics and morality of man that this anime presents.

i haven't really seen the final conclusion but the other series that the artist did for Hikaru no go concludes very bad so I guess if you have seen how hikaru ends people are more aware of the strange ending and aren't surprised...but then again doesn't the ending depend on the writer.?

58 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-11-22 02:04 ID:Ebswcsq9

Of course it depends on the writer, they're the one writing it. Sometimes it might also depend on a publisher who is pressuring for more material.

Death note has it's bad points- boring, stupid first episode, lame waving around of pens in air with overly dramatic music, shinigami who look retarded, death of L, reduction of appeal during the last ten or so episodes, failed appeal devices, etc.

But, what good series doesn't have its share of problems like this? [ok, so maybe the best of the best don't] The amount of good stuff this eries has far outweighs the little failures listed above in my opinion, leaving it as a highly entertaining series. It's good appealing, well developed characters, a compelling storyline, the setting is more realistic than most, awesome awesome voice actors, and unusual kind of bad guy, intellectual stimulation to some degree, a good pace, highly amusing opening and ending songs, and most importantly, at some points in most episodes, most people will think 'oooh, clever! cool!' or something to that effect, and be excited to watch the next episode. that's why i say it's good. oh yeah, it's not really targeted at a narrow audience, so a really wide variety of people can enjoy watching it.

You should really do without the teenagers rule since whether you admit it or not most anime are created with that audience in mind. That said there are lot of interesting anime where the age of the cast means shit if they behave outside their stereotypes. I found Narutaru to be quite enjoyable and last time I checked it did not have teenagers but kids which may or not be worse using your rule

my list of series that are like death note but less shitty (from the other thread):
monster
spiral

anyone have any others?

81 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-04-30 10:22 ID:wvuwSOlB

Monster was a horrible series of an awesome manga. You should have read its 18 volumes as opposed to watching those 74 episodes. Much easier that way and pacing isn't as slow as the anime makes it out to be which is a plus to those who were intimidate with the length

Spiral is a 25 episode advertisement of an average manga you might as well read its manga up to the point you were then continue from there rather than bother with the anime. Should you for any reason want to get the series done then by all means go ahead as long you intend to read from the first chapters to remind yourself what the did the anime did a poor work explaining. There were enough subtle changes so you won't feel like you have done the same thing before

82 Name: Sen : 2008-05-03 23:10 ID:X7pCdLsh

The first episode of deathnote wasn't the best ever..
Basically, they have to establish the basic plot points first; use of deathnote, shinigami (I think Ryuk turns up in episode 1) and what light is trying to do. The next few episodes, where they start trying to find who is murdering the criminals, are much better and they get better until episode 25. I can't tell you anything about the episodes after 25/26 because I didn't watch any further than that.

My guess would be most movies and OVAs because they have less time to get shitty. Short series (anything less than 20 episodes) would also count here but they aren't as often made as the other two.
