Let this be a lesson to you on how not to start a thread.

Don't start a thread with a single question. Start with a general overview of the topic, and then ask your question inside the thread, so the thread can stay around and be useful for further discussion.

Well, I figured those with something to say about mushishi would take the opportunity to say it. I figured my question was general and open enough to stimulate discussion.

I watched up to ep2 before giving up, too bored to continue. I heard there is no overall plot either. Guy travels, solves problems, moves to the next place. Imagery may be unsuitable for children, it's quite creepy at times.

Mushi-shi is the most stunningly beautiful show produced in practically ever.

but i don't know why the effect of mushi is always bad if they're neither good nor evil
must be a japan thing

It depends,...

If you want to see an action packed anime, it's not for you. There is almos zero action.

If you want to see a beautiful anime, it's a good idea.

If you want to follow character development over time, it's not for you, because each episode is a self contained story, almost totally independent from the others.

On the othe hand, each episode presents a problem that makes you think and wonder after watching it.

If you see too many episodes at once, you may find the structure repetitive (normal it's nearly ALWAYS the same structure), but the structure is not the point of the anime, it's the problem that it develops over one episode.

The best way to aproach Mushishi is to see it as a beautiful animated painting that makes you think and dream.

Some minor plus are the fact that the characters are the most japanese looking I ever saw in an anime. The music is great and contributes to the feeling of the anime. I also enjoyed to see a lot of traditional japanese household architecture.

For me it's one of the best anime I ever saw, but it's obvious that it won't suite everybody.

Maybe, good effects simply don't require the services of a mushishi : p
