I'm curious as to how you you came by a censored version of Catcher in the Rye. Salinger doesn't even like artwork on the cover of any of his books and this rule has been held through countless printings, so the man clearly has control over publication. I can't believe there's a cleaned up version.

It seems a little overrated now, but back in the day, it was ground-breaking. It's not so much that it's a great novel, it's more that it suddenly changed the rules. Bear in mind how heavily censored and sugar coated everything was in the 1950s. This book is contemporary with Ozzie and Harriet. Just think about that while you're reading it. It's not happy or positive, the main character is a dumb little jerk, and the setting is far removed from the suburban bliss that was being pushed so hard on America at the time. Basically, it was just honest...
