The big question!
Valid XHTM frameset without framespacing, is it really possible?
Many have tried, but yet no-one has succeded. There has to be some sort of work-around for this. border="0" and frameborder="0" seems to be the only ways, but that's not valid.
Why would you want to?
Because the border is ugly.
This accurately represent the fact that the concept of frames itself is ugly. There are very, very few situations where you actually should use frames. Static, non-scrolling portions of a page are better done with CSS position: fixed, and re-using code is better done with server-side includes.
Frames break bookmarking and reloading, too.

one situation where one would need to use frames would be a loose network of sites with a centralized navigation bar. said sites might not all be capable of retrieving a navigation bar from a central server, so you'd have to use frames.
can you think of an existing site like that? :)
OOOH STING
One advantage of not being able to remove the frame border is that it ensures that the visitor will be able to resize said border, no? Maybe that's what they had in mind.
4chan's frameset page isn't compliant entirely because of that (also, because I suck at HTML). Of course, since the navbar page now takes up twice the room it used to, I see a scrollbar anyway, but it worked for a while.
