Tokyo (JCN) Jan 13, 2006 - Japanese contact lens manufacturer Seed has announced its plan to build a new contact lens production plant in Konosu, Saitama Prefecture.
The company acquired a site in the city for 970 million yen ($8.5 mil) in December 2005. Construction will begin within this year and will be completed by fall 2007.
Seed plans to additionally invest about 5 billion yen ($43.8 mil) in plant and equipment. Slated to go into operation in spring 2008, the new plant will mainly manufacture daily disposable contact lenses.
In Japan, there were 15.03 million contact lens users in 2004. The number is expected to rise to 16.4 million by 2010. The daily disposable contact lens market has grown from 28 billion yen ($245 mil) in 2000 to more than 60 billion yen ($526 mil) today, and is expected to reach 90 billion yen ($789 mil) by 2010.
