NAGOYA ― A 46-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of committing arson by setting fire to his own house in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, and told police later he wanted to serve time in a prison, police said.
Katsumi Suzuki, who is unemployed, set fire on futon in his room of the second-story wooden house in Nagoya around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to investigations. The 75-square-meter house was burned down, police said. Suzuki and his 78-year-old father sustained slight injuries to the respiratory tract.

for some reason my friend in japan tells her house area in.. ...whatever.
The thing is you will pay 60000 yen for the cheapest smallest place in tokyo (shared bathroom and all), and pay up 3 rents before even moving in. And if you are not japanese, good luck, nobody wants foreigners. A japanese yakuza asshole has better chance of moving in.

cheaper places can be found for 30-40000 yen, those are the ones with shared or no bathroom. For 60-70000 you can get your own bathroom.
and yeah, 1-2 months gift money + 1-2 months deposit + 1 month for the bloodsucking real estate agent, just for the privilege of paying rent afterwards. (oh yeah, contract renewal after 2 years = another extra month for the real estate agency).
fuck the japanese real estate market right up its thieving xenophobic ass. (bitter? who, me? hahaha.)
