KASUKABE, Saitama -- Private information on thousands of residents, including the names, ages and medical histories of people in the national health insurance scheme, was leaked over the Internet through file-sharing software on a municipal government worker's computer, city officials announced Monday.
The leaked information in 5,196 cases concerned people in the national health insurance scheme who underwent medical checkups between 1999 and 2005. As well as people's names, ages and health insurance certificate numbers, the data included their addresses, gender, names of illnesses they had, and the names of hospitals they had attended.
In 6,020 other cases, data such as lists of information on certificates that included the names and addresses of residents was also leaked.
Officials said the information was leaked by a 33-year-old tax section official while he was using file-sharing software on a computer at his home on March 8. The leak was uncovered after the municipal government received an inquiry from another party on March 11.
Previously the 33-year worker had belonged to the city's insurance and pension section. The municipal government has banned external use of work data, but the worker said he had taken the information home because he had been busy.
"I was doing work at home due to the pressure of my job. After being moved to a new section I didn't delete the data relating to insurance," the worker was quoted as telling officials. (Mainichi)
