Short and spiky (20)

I naturally have thick, black, dry, semi-curly and very messy hair that grows into a sort of afro if I let it grow. I've always just shaved it really short, but I'm considering something like this:

Any suggestions on how to accomplish something like that? My hair's currently a little longer than that (but curly, afro-y and fucked up), and I have little to no experience with haircare other than the very basic hygienic stuff.

Chances are you won't be able to do that style if you have thick and slightly curly hair. You could try using hair straighteners (those tong shaped things) on your hair and style it afterwards. Be careful with the straighteners so you dont kill your hair or burn your scalp.

Well, here's a pic.

Anything remotely awesome I can do with that?

You have such beautiful curls, you should leave it alone!

Anyway, your hair seems a bit too short for an iron, but you can use a chemical relaxer. You would have to touch up the roots with more chemical relaxer as it grows and keep it properly moisturized and conditioned or it will frizz. Also be VERY careful as it can severely burn the the scalp.

If you have the funds, you should go to the salon. If not, relaxer can be found at the drugstore.

I live in Norway -- I definitely have the funds, so I'll have a go at the salon.

Also, well, I took that pic almost right out of the shower. For the five minutes of post-shower semi-wetness, my hair actually looks quite decent. After that, it's just a frizzy afro bomb gone off.

I absolutely adore your hair. Makes me want to run my fingers through it.

If you insist on the short and spiky style, you could give it a try. But my feeling is that your current hair is as fine as it is. Just try putting a small blob of gel on your palms, rubbing it evenly in them, and running it through your hair for that "wet, just got out of the shower look".

Have you seen Entourage?

I would second the "wet, just got out the shower" curly look. It looks very nice, but I can imagine you don't like it when it dries out and afros more.

Yeah, I don't mind the wet-ish look, but I'm having quite a hard time maintaining it. I know just about nothing about haircare, though. I've tried conditioner, a couple of gels, and some moisturiser-like thing, but with only limited success (i.e. it lasts for half an hour instead of ten minutes).

Suggestions?

You can try pomade, it will help keep the wet look.

Something like Murray's Nu-Nile?

Or the Senscience Pliable Shine pomade?

I always got the impression that pomades were more for that freakishly slick, neat 50s look.

Well you may as well give it a try. After all, a tub of that pomade isn't going to cost too much, so if you find it's not quite right you will only have wasted a couple of euros (sorry, does norway use euros?)

Norwegian krones ;>

Right, I'll give it a shot tomorrow, and possibly report back on the results.

Spiky hair hasn't been in since at least 1998.

You obviously haven't been in Norway.

Or they have, and they acknowledge that Norway isn't exactly at the cutting edge of fashion.

lolupdate.

So I got my hair thinned (with those fancy scissors) and bought some random creams, gels and pomades, and I kind of like the new messy look.

But is there a way for me to get it neatened up for special occasions? Will I have to resort putting a shitload of pomade in there and go for ultra-greasy ( http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/cinema/2636/pic-coll1/timcurry.jpg ), or can I get away with something else?
