Cool or not?

Definately cool, although it might not suit everyone.

Can be totally cool. Depends on your face, but also on your main clothing style and your attitude.

Also remember that in some social circles they're really not well received; that they mostly make you instantaneously prejudiced as a hippie by 90% of the people you'll encounter; that they might make finding a work difficult, depending on what you're searching for.

And for toppers; dreads need attention, but however well you take care of them, they'll end up getting mouldy. And when you don't want them anymore, you'll have to shave your head.

OP here. Basically I finish school in 3 months, and have been growing out my hair for about the last 9 months... I'm not worried about shaving it because I have been shaving my head for the last 4 years of my life :P

I think here, in NZ, I won't have too much trouble finding a part time job while at university with them, and so I have at least 5 years before I even have to consider a real job.

Supposedly, according to my friends anyway, they will suit me, but I like to get opinions of the more important of social interaction with outside from other people...
So, thank you all!

If you just get a Doom shirt and some Carhart overalls you can be a crust punk.

Keep in mind that people will categorize you by the way you present yourself. To a certain degree people use their bodies as methods of identifying themselves to other members of whatever subculture they participate in. Depending on the places you go be prepared to face the assumptions that you smoke weed, listen to nu-metal or reggae or crust, are liberal-leaning or a radical leftist, etc. If these things don't bother you or are somewhat accurate in defining your interests then go for it.

Oh and expect the police to hassle you a lot for the aforementioned reasons.

My hair is still about six months shy of dreads. I'm of the anarcho-punk persuasion myself, and I have a union job in a factory so if my supervisor doesn't like it I can tell them to get fucked. Your mileage may very.

OP here again.

Yeah crust, black metal and hardcore are how I roll. So that isn't an issue for me atm!

I'm more of a centre - libertarian if you go by the quadrant system of thought tho! Hmm so far it all sounds positive, as a teenager I get a whole lot of police attention anyway, so again, that doesn't bother me at all. You don't get charged with possesion in NZ if you only have enough for yourself, so basically weed won't be a problem for me anyway!

in my opinion it all depends on who does them and what style they are
like the really thick ones on brown hair makes your head look like its covered in a ton of little shits
the thinner ones look best on most people, talk to your friends, be a looser and try making fake ones for a day and try seeing which ones look best for your face.

Dreds can be super sexy or uber nasty
