I'm Chinese and have generic jet black hair. Lately I've been kind of bored with it so I'm wondering if dyeing it dark brown would be a good idea. I've never dyed my hair before so does anyone have tips on what to avoid? Also, does dyeing my hair once make it less soft?

Im Chinese, well bleaching your hair is already harmful but if you want to dye your hair with noticiful effect you need to bleach before dying.
I dyed my hair blond, red, dark brown and currently looking for dark blue (which will only be seen if under the light) so ya, if you want to dye your hair that its brown and not black completely, you need to bleach before dying it which will make it (Brunette).
No, dying your hair wont make it less soft. (all, if not; most chinese peoples hair are soft naturally.

dying, has different meanings in english....dying is not dead, dye > dying for colouring your hair
dying can also mean death but both have different meaning depending on how you use a sentence.
