Has anyone here tasted Melon-pan? Is it worth the effort to make? If you have a different recepie which you know is good, please post it.
You COULD make "regular" melon-pan...but would'nt you rather make the Melon-sushi-pan from Yakitate!Japan? After all, everybody (Y!J fans at least) know that Melon-pan has a "weakness"- cookie and bread dough bake differently, so most melon-pan are made with the bread section slightly underbaked.
The ingenious solution- bake them seperately! When both are ready slap them together with a heap of melon cream in the middle, Sushi-style!
Now who said you can't learn anything from television.
I tried making it with this recipe last year. It was kind of involved, and I don't think I did it exactly right - but it was pretty good. I couldn't find melon extract, though, so I used pineapple.
Wow... I tried it with that recipe as well, and melon extract was too expensive to order off online, so I used Pineapple.
I didn't really like it, but my younger siblings loved it.
I made melon-pan yesterday, and it turned out pretty well. I used another bread recepie which required less time in the oven, so it wouldn't become underbaked. I will definitively make melon-pan again some day :D
Good job! I'm on my spring break this week - maybe I'll try again as well.
omg that sounds bizarre...I've never heard of melon-pan before. Anyone got a picture of how it actually looks like?
So, since last time I used pineapple, I figured it's about time for me to try again with melon.
Just ordered melon concentrate, along with cantaloupe concentrate (Japanese melons are close to cantaloupe) and natural green dye from www.naturesflavors.com, although I'm not sure if the site's legit or not.
Updates when/if I receive it!

In the recipe that was linked, I think you bake them seperately.
But what's this melon cream and where can I get it?
I used to buy it on a whim every time I hit up this Japanese bakery. It's delicious!
It didn't taste overwhelmingly like melon, though.
yay, it came! Only took like, a week.

I would never buy anything from a site called "naturesflavors.com".
D:
What are you going to eat for lunch?
I'm eating nothing but I had Curry and rice with chutny yesterday.

Ah yeah, the melon flavering seemed right, but...
When I used the green dye it was actually purple. (Eventhough the bottle was labeled green.)

That sinking feeling is one more reason to buy from a store. OTOH, I hadn't found a good store to buy it from until extremely recently. And oddly enough, the store is chinese-run... it does have two flavours of melonpan though (and neither are melon flavoured.)
There doesn't have to be melon in melon-pan, it's supposed to LOOK like a melon, not taste like one.
I tried that recipe and it didn't rise, so I think I did something wrong with the yeast.
You could just buy melon-pan from 'Bread top' <-- major hk/jp bread shop.

"Melonpan, also known as Melon Pan or Melon buns, is a sweet bread from Japan. It is a soft, round bread covered in a crisp, cookie-like coating. Its appearance is supposed to resemble a melon, such as a rock melon. Typically, they are not melon flavoured. There is at least one known variation which involves placing a few chocolate chips in between the cookie layer and the bread layer.
The word has an interesting etymology, since Melon is a loan word from English, while Pan is a loan word from the Portuguese for bread.
Melonpan and Pineapple bun from Hong Kong is very similar for its way of cooking and naming by the shape. "

All the Bread Top branches in Sydney stopped selling it. Bastards.
I've had it many times when I was in Japan...mmm...so good^^ 7/11 and Lawson sell pretty decent ones
I just get the melon bread imports from my local Japanese supermarket, sometimes the smaller chocolate-chip ones at the bakery next door. Granted, I only ate melon bread twice so I'm sadly not a melon bread expert.
Are the prewrapped Japanese imported supermarket ones supposed to have a sticky, odd tasting center? o_o;; The edges of the cookie crust were pretty nice, but as I got closer to the center of the bread, the cookie crust turned all sticky and weird. Is that normal?
this is normal for packaged imports, but not of freshly baked melonpan. melonpan should have a slightly crisp outer shell and the inside should be soft bread, but never sticky. I had some of the packaged kind once and i absolutely hate it. i can't stand it when the cookie is sticky.
I would really love to taste a fresh melonpan. If only there was a recipe easy to use with north-american ingredients. I've heard that they use diffrent types of flour which I'm not familiar of.
I went to Bread Top in Sydney last week, Sussex St Chinatown & World Square and they both had Melon Pan in stock! I bought all 5 of them from both stores! Bwahaha! I hadn't had them in so long!!! Mmmmm....
i'm gonna make one with corn.. hehe
if you want to know what melon bread looks like watch shagugan no shana(anime) shana eats it everyday for lunch
I found the melon extract online and ordered it. There is also a small shop in Washingtion DC that does specialty extracts that sales it.
I found melon extract on ebay for pretty cheap
