Durian. Some say it is the King of Fruits but I know most westerners really, really hate the durian's smell. A recent durian eating competition for tourist in Penang, Malaysia was canceled when ALL the contestant quit after catching a whiff of the durian smell.

Any comments on this fruits?

I like it once in a while. Smells weird, but tastes better, and the texture is amazing -- like a cross between a mango and a silky custard.

The frozen version, which is all you can export, as far as I know, is disgusting -- the texture gets messed up, and it starts to smell worse and taste less.

Thai people believe that if you drink whisky and eat durian at the same time you'll die. Apparently, it will raise your body temperature to a fatal level. Needless to say, I played many durian-and-whiskey drinking games with Thai drinking buddies. We all made it out alive.

I had some durian gelato recently from Marco Polo's in San Francisco. I can see why some people like it, but for me it wasn't quite worth enduring the smell.

Mmm. I have to say that I enjoyed Durian as a child, but grew out of it due to the smell. The frozen kind is rather distgusting. Durian ice cream is rather nice.

On another note, perhaps it's called king of fruits due to the spikes and overwhelming smell? Just a thought.

I've never tried durian - any comparison as to the flavor so I can get an idea? They're expensive here so I don't want to waste my money.

I tried to eat it. I honestly did. The taste experience was unique, and not really comparable to anything else. It was a horrible experience. You know how they say a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster is like being hit by a gold brick wrapped in a lemon? I'd have to say that eating durian is like getting smacked in the head. When you first put it in your mouth, there's one "punch"...when you swallow it, there's a second "punch". The flavor is like rich cream, peanut butter, the potent smell of Plumeria flowers and something that seems like either motor oil, or rancid butter.

i cringe at the very mention of durian.
As a child of about 9, i had a very traumatic experience with the accursed fruit. I went to my dad's house one afternoon, to find the entire place bathed in a sulphuric, rotten, utterly nausiating and dry-reach inducing odour. 'dad, what's that horrible smells?!' i screeched, running into the kitchen where he was to get my explanation. There i found the source of the stench, which he was eating, to my horror. 'oh, it's durian' he tells me, 'try some. it actualy tastes realy great' i peered at the hideous thing, then shaking my head, i began to back away, kinda in shock and dusgust. Before i knew what had happened, dad had shoved a massive chunk of its slimy, buttery, gross feeling flesh into my mouth. i screamed and spat it out, and spent 5 minutes washing the horrible horrible taste out of my mouth.
it was a horrible experience, and i will never forget it. i was totaly traumatised.

Wow. I would have never thought to hear a Durian horror story like that until I came to 4-ch.

When I visited Singapore there were signs on the subway with pictures of durian and a red X over it. "No Durian Allowed on the Subway" was the clear message.
