I am going to college and living in the dorms this coming September. Needless to say, I am excited. But I have long heard that dorm food sucks, so, what are some good food that is easy enough for me to cook in my own room?
There's the obvious: ramen noodle, mac and cheese, chips, pop tarts, but what are some others?
Also, can students actually cook in the room, with pan and pot and the whole nine yard?
Pop tarts: diabeetus.
Chips: fat.
I would not choose those two unless you have a really good genetic disposition against fatness and type II diabetes.
Good cheap'n'easy healthy foods include microwaveable veggie burgers (and microwaveable vegetarian stuff in general is a safe choice), tuna sandwiches, soups, home-made burritos/tacos cooked in the microwave(tortilla, beans, cheese, olives, microwaveable rice, peppers, you get the idea), cereal (stuff like grape nuts, unfrosted mini-wheats, corn flakes, make sure there's no high fructose corn syrup), eggs (can scramble them in the microwave, look online), kosher low-fat hot dogs when they're on sale, and of course as you mentioned noodles and pasta meal in a box foods like hamburger helper, macaroni.
Hope this helps.

Your menu lacks meat. A fuckton of meat.
i don't think poptarts or chips, or for that matter, any snacks, would be so bad as long as you eat it in moderation. of course you shouldn't eat the whole bag of chips or poptarts everyday, but i don't think those are as bad as you say. as long as you eat it in moderation.

Good meat will be a difficult thing to cook with in his situation probably, unless he has a kitchen equipped with the basics - oven, range, etc. Microwaved meat isn't going to be very good, taste and often nutrition-wise. Not to mention good meat is pretty expensive usually.

I'm still going to disagree with you on the poptarts. There are some chips even I'm ok with, but the poptarts really have nothing good in them.

Actually on further contemplation he could probably get one of those George Foreman grills as those take up less space than a microwave. As long as he could afford meat he'd be set.
salads are also great. you just needa buy the veggies and some dressing. well, it's great but i guess not many college students prefer to eat salads.
Well, I'm actually a freshman in college and I don't know about your school but the food court at mine actually has pretty good food. Also, there's a kitchen in the dorm where you can cook food. However, if you want quick, easy food you can make in your dorm room be sure to keep fruit stocked up for snacks. Also, I don't really like them but my roommate eats a lot of prepared dinners you can just microwave. However, there are plenty of easy meals you can make in the microwave yourself. I went to this site all the time for easy recipes http://allrecipes.com/HowTo/Campus-Cooking-the-Advanced-Course/Detail.aspx
One word. Ramen
The crack of noodles, but hey, you can't go wrong.
Curry recipe adapted from a description in the autobiography of Alan Watts:
Cut up a little onion, a few hot dogs, and fry them with a little curry powder and ketchup or whatever you have.
Kept me alive for two years. Is also yummy.
looks at people staring in horror
<_<;
It depends on what theyll let you have in your dorm. At UCLA they didnt even allow microwaves...
Just make sure you buy some fruit from time to time, it doesnt need to be cooked and will prevent you dying from scurvy.
