I and a friend tried Lebanese style beef shawerma on pita bread today and we liked it a lot. We'd like to try it at home.
How do we do it, friends? We're both fairly experienced cooks but we know nothing of food from that part of the world.
What spices are used to cook the beef? Where can we get the pickled vegetables that were put in the pita with it? And what goes in that sauce?
Thanks.
Make hummus or tahini. You can also make tzatziki sauce, but it's not quite Lebanese. It could go well with your food though. I'm not too clear on the spices, but I'm guessing that coriander and cumin would be needed at the least.
I used to get chicken shwarma at a lebanese place, they never used tzatziki sauce, it was always tahini. As for the pickled stuff, you'll probably need to go to a middle eastern market, or find a good, diverse grocery store with a middle eastern section.
I'd also advise googling it all, and possibly eating it a few more times so you know better what it's supposed to taste like when you make it.
If it's anything as good as souvlaka, someone please post their recipes.
