Console: Layer Section (SS)
PC: Imperishable Night
Shmups being Shoot-Em-Ups right?
would say guwange, but that doesn't quite count so : ikaruga
Ikaruga for the win.
Although Gunbird is pretty fun, too.
The last one I played was Turrican II for C-64.
And that's my favorite (next to Turrican).
Silvergun or Night Raid, both played in the same session anyways.
> Turrican is horizontal and not vertical ^^
more liek parallax am i rite?
Summer Carnival'92: Recca (NES)

I see you! Also, Imperishable Night rocks.
Sister de la Barrage is actually one of my favourite shooters I've played lately. Mouse controls are a much cooler idea than one would first assume.
I would like to start the "schmup is a stupid word; they are called shooters" flame-war now.
"Shooter" is acceptable. "Shoot-em-up" is too, but a pain to say and write. "Schmup" is a Don Martin sound effect.
I use shooters for games like R-TYPE & Parodius and the like.
I use shoot-em-ups for games like Turrican.
I just call things vertical shooters, horizontal shooters, or whatever. I guess my favorite vertical shooter would be Dodonpachi. I tried getting into Ikaruga once, but I usually get too caught up in chaining well to actually learn the patterns right.

Yes.
I personally love Mars Rising and Deimos Rising. They're vertical shooters for the Mac OS. You'll need OS9(Classic) if you want to play Mars Rising, but Deimos Rising was included with some iMacs, and a demo can be downloaded on http://www.ambrosiasw.com
The first Gigawing. Initially, I liked Ikaruga more -- but now I think its concept is slightly over-engineered. Yes, I suck at that game, how did you know?

I agree with 13 and second the motion for a flame-war.
I would also like to add that saying "tate" in an English sentence is stupid when there's already the perfectly good English word "vertical."
>>19
Yes, but then it's unclear whether you're playing a true vertical shooter, or a horizontal one with leet display hax.
I'm surprised no one's mentioned rRootage:
