I think we all despise the publishers (oh where, oh where has LGS gone?), but they're just catering to demand. The average gamer likes eye-candy. No, wait, they demand it. Multiplayer too. And ragdoll physics. Somewhere down the line decent AI too.
That all costs a fortune. A game can be amazingly innovative, but without the window-dressing few outside of the veteran or hardcore gamers will try it.
