Best MIDI option for dos/dosbox games? (7)

I've been trying out a few, mostly SoundBlaster, General midi, and Roland. General midi and Roland seem to sound better than SB, but it sounds like some instruments are better and some are worse. For example drums on one, and strings on the other. Is there a "best" option to get the most realistic sound or the closest to the designer's intentions? Poring through websites I've seen mention of a possibly-not-entirely-legal BIOS for Roland that could improve the music.
