I haven't researched too much about this, but a week or so ago I saw an article on Fark on Civ4. Supposedly, you will have the ability to found religions, specifically Confucianism, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, or Taoism.
While I really like the idea, the list of religions they chose is weird. Confucianism is a philosophy. It bases all of its beliefs on logic and does not require belief in deities, magic, or anything supernatural. Taoism is a little more of a religion, but not by a large margin. If they could include Taoism, why not Shintoism? Shinto is obviously a religion, with millions of adherents; Taoism is rapidly dying out.
I think it would be better if you could just make your own religion up. Of course, I have no idea what effects founding a religion will have in the game, but just an idea.
I liked when they introduced Fundamentalism with their special unit "fanatics" in CivII.
I wonder if Islam will provide you with suicidal Jihaddim.
This discussion belongs elsewhere, probably, but while the Tao Te Ching itself is far more philosophical than religious, and contains little or no supernaturalism, people apparently just can't stand a religion without lots and lots of wacky magic and adventures, so they added a large bunch of myths later, such as the many adventures of the Eight Immortals. These are even more hilarious than such tales usually are.
What? No Jews? Damn, I wanted a special unit: Bar Mitzvah Complex. Build one and get a +2 to inflatable shoe and chair-lifting production. Click on a unit and it'd respond "Oy!"
Hopefully someone'll mod the game and add in all those other religions. I'd love to throw Zoroastrians against Druids and see what happens.

Whoops, forgot Judaism (ノ∀`)
It seems like the creators are trying to make a lot of the game easily editable, with most of the stuff in text files and such. So, yeah, you will be able to watch the Scientologists fight the Christian Scientists once more, in color!
Fundementalist Paganism VS. Islam!
Actually, there was a modder of civ (can't remember 3 or 4) that was making entire missions based on video games as well. So you could have completely fictional religions and stuff.
Something like the Civ 2 mods based off of Master of Orion and stuff like that, right? Those ones were cool as hell.
I believe he was basing it off of FF games in particular (at last look). So it was things like Yevon (led by Yuna) vs Al Bhed (led by Rikku -- I think) or Avalanche (Cloud as commander) vs Haliburton -- I mean Shinra, (Rufus as commander). I forget the rest. But it looked pretty good IMO.
I wish he'd branch out a bit. Hyrule (link) vs Mushroom Kingdom might be a sweet matchup.
