Justify me a PSP (16)

I have an opportunity to get a PSP for $150 that's in semi-used condition. I have a DS and don't use it all that much, but I prefer that system better. I'm not too big on most of the titles coming up, but if someone can name me THE #1 REASON to get a PSP (I already have an iPod and laptop, so no need for connectivity, all I want is teh gaemz) as Halo was for the Xbox and all the decent RPGs are for the PS2, I'll probably end up getting it.

The catch is that I'm about to spend $80 on Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan and Cooking Mama, so it's going to be one or the other. I know that $150 for a PSP is a very good deal, but I don't see myself using it as much as my DS, which is only on long car or shopping trips (the girlfriend takes some time to try on clothes and shoes) or to feed and take care of our Nintendogs. I like the DS for what it can do with the interface, but the PSP is the powerhouse and has MG Acid, which I wasn't uber-gung ho to play, but would if I could.

I have no plans to watch UMDs, and while I'd like to put old ROMs on the thing, it isn't an absolute necessity, so firmware isn't a concern.

So? Should I go for it? What games are absolute must plays that are only on the PSP?

Don't bother. The analog stick/nub is murder on your wrist and thumb muscles after an hour or so of sustained holding that can happen in sports or third person action games. The throw is also too short to be practical, so you only really have analog direction. If you're not going to use the UMD or flash stored movies and music, the games don't justify the price. The load times become infuriating when you have 15 minutes free to pop in a game.

Introduce yourself to the wonderful world of homebrew with PSP. Don't worry about the current PSP games out there (with the exception of Lumines, which is amazingly fun, but an acquired taste). The real fun is in emulation. It's a truly wonderful system that you can use to carry around all of your old Nintendo and Sega games. I enjoy playing Final Fantasy (the original) on mine while traveling.

There are plenty of homebrew loaders out there for any version, but to really get into things, see if you can find one with firmware version 1.5, 1.51, or 2.0. You can accomplish some crazy things with that. There's even a program that lets you search for wireless access points.

The GP2X is better for pure emulation. Open platform so no need to dick around with hacks, the screen has a tv aspect ratio, and more ram to play with. No wireless connectivity as of yet, but if you're not in the habit of playing on handhelds with friends it won't make much difference.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX = awesome.

I bought my PSP to watch movies, play music, and beat up Dan.

Street fighter alpha 3 MAX is murder on the thumbs

Lumines is ...amazing and win wrapped up in a delectable UMD, and Acid 2 is quite good, but homebrews are just great. There's a new one I found that allows you to access internet radio from any wi-fi point. :D

The GP2X would be pretty cool if two out of three units sold weren't DOA

PSP is going to get a camera and a GPS system soon. As for games, all the good games seem to be released in Japan. :(

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions.

MP4's (I love to have entire movies in my pocket).

Seriously, you're worried about buying a great deal on a PSP, but you're considering buying Cooking Mama?

Wow. I'm not sure what to say.

Either way, I haven't touched my DS in ages. I use my PSP pretty regularly.

I strongly suggest that you buy the PSP. As long as you know what you're doing, they're amazing.

Also, I forgot to add, you can download free game demos, and most of them don't take up very much space.

Man speaks the truth. For the longest time, I had no games, no homebrew, a 2gb memory stick, and all the demos. I was pretty content too.

Just for reference, I get my demos at www.pspimages.net
