Xenosaga Episode 1 was highly anticipated, because of Xenogears' good reputation. However, the storytelling of Xenosaga was bland and problematic. Also, the "creepy doll eyes" of the character designs discouraged a lot of fans. I haven't played Episode 2, but apparently even though the characters' faces were made more human and the storyline became more interesting, the gameplay--combat especially--was supposed to be frustrating.

Xenosaga I was never released in Europe, it was during a period where Namco Europe (such a thing actually exists, even if they license distribution to external companies like EA and Sony) didn't care much to release anything outside of Tekken and Ridge Racer. So games like Katamari Damacy, Xenosaga I, Taiko Drum Master, Nightmare of Druaga, Klonoa 2 GBA etc were never released, (although We ♥ Katamari and Xenosaga II came out).
..maybe a bit of a tangent there. I've heard mixed things about Xenosaga II and how it compares to the first, but I'm thinking of picking it up.
I didn't think I wanted to live in a world without KATAMARI DAMACY...but WE ♥ KATAMARI will do just fine.
I like Xenosaga's tone and setting, but it's a mediocre game. Gameplay is meh, music is repetitive, graphics are questionable (especially in the second one; the first was kinda cute), and extremely little of the story is explained. I mean, it's cool to set up foreshadowing and keep a little mystery for later, but not when every character has a cubic mile of secret backstory that is only hinted at. For example, Chaos' ability to attack Gnosis directly as shown in XS1. I haven't played through 2 yet (and likely won't find the motivation to), but I'm about 2/3 of the way through it and that was never referenced or brought up again. WTF?

Personally i find that episode 2 had better gameplay than episode 1. both the battle system and overall graphics were upped (unless my memory is off). In general both series had pretty long playtimes compared to other games out there :)
However to criticize episode 2:
-if you plan to take on all the quest, be prepared to do ALOT of walking around. just walking.
-there really isnt a noteworthy bonus to having save data from episode 1 (unless you just love swimsuits)
im still interested enough to dish out for episode 3 though :p
