Spore (8)

In this thread, we talk about spore.

Outside of footage there is out there for this game, there isnt much to show what other interesting things this game can do. Apparently you can create flying creatures as well as creatures that live in the sea. So far I'm liking what I'm seeing. When I first watched the spore footage from the GDC (game developers conference) I was saying "wow this is the best game ever!". I hop that the game has all that functionality that we saw in there.

I had asked myself "I wonder if I could make [insert creature idea here]?" and then he showed the care bear and that settled it. I was going to make a race of [something] with eyes in its [something] and blah blah the possibilities are exciting.

Procedural generation might do wonders for games if it catches on.

So what kind of creatures are you guys going to make?

Procedural generation should have been doing wonders for games for years now, but everyone was too wrapped up in pushing polygon counts and texture sizes. In the early 90s, Frontier Elite II and Frontier: First Encounters were able to fit an entire procedurally generated 1:1 scale galaxy within a single floppy disk, while still having enough room for all the game code and art.

I want to make an amorphous blob and a creature like a rolled up hedgehog, except with legs instead of spines. And a Pierson's Pupetter, just to see how the Spore code makes it move.

35 minute gameplay and commentary video, a great watch for an introduction to spore.

You say you can create flying creatures?
Does this mean there will be hover cities?

Well, I'd imagine the Puppeteer would move a lot like the tripod in the demo. Just backwards. Possibly a bit differently due to not having a tail...

OK, now I want to find out as well.

^ Wow, what a well thought out reply. I could feel your single digit IQ straining........

Yeah, Spore seems to be a good brain child. That said I never fully unterstood the big attraction behind the Sims. I did play it of course, but I always felt that Will Wright was kind of over-rated.

As for what creature, I'm just going to wait and see, not going to plan ahead..
