It wasn't actually in 3D (besides the over world), that's was just marketing. The backgrounds were all low-res pictures.
There is nothing that couldn't have been done just as well on the SNES, besides FMV. Why was it on the PS? Exclusivity.

That linear goose chase is what bothered me the most. So dull, but at least it ended before the game did.

I hated it and it pushed me over the edge in my opinion of the game. I'd rather build a character's strengths, not a green orb's.

I got attached to FFVI, myself. Those before loved themselves some FFIV, for reasons I can't explain.
