The Beginning and the End of MMORPGs, the just but fair king. Pre-1999, that is.
so? what about it?
I remember a OU screenshot comic once (Lord Blackthorn or something) where a guy had to go somewhere far, but he decided to walk instead of teleport. Along the way, he helped some people, killed a griefer, found a bargain sale, and various other mini adventures. That was truly a living virtual world. None of this instanced nonsense so common today.
Ah, I found it. Killed on Sight, with Dread Lord Moervan. Sadly, all but the text has vanished into the Internet ether.

UO being one of the few MMOs that allows players to build their own structures on the land, I'm wondering how that worked out. Does anyone here have experience with it or know of some writings about UO house building? I'm interested in economic and social effects like growth patterns, player made towns, running out of room in overpopulated servers, etc.
House building was kinda cool but kinda gay cause you couldn't destroy houses.
So houses turned into cookie monster statues. Because people would be so bored, they would start to stack items on the ground (yes you could stack items on the ground in UO and physically drop boxes to obstruct things in UO, anyways).
People would stack items in their house and make little dolls and stuff out of them. Some looked like cookie monsters. And because houses never moved unless they were unattended to for a while. They would remain there forever.
Just because some people thought houses might not work in a game does not mean they can't work somehow though.
I hate when people dismiss an idea or concept in a game just because it didn't work once. That really fucking pisses me off. Like on gamefaqs. Gamefaqs is a circlejerk cesspit for the ignorant masses. But that's nothing new.
One time I tried composing an actual discussion with the inhabitants of that place. They acted like complete idiots. Worse then 4chan or iichan. I mean, I don't like 4chan or IIchan but gamefaqs users can seriously cause you brain damage.
The slew of internet catch phrases you come across there is staggering. Why do they have to extend their stench into places where it does not belong? Anyways.
Starwars Galaxies had houses too ya know. The same guy who was lead designer for SWG did UO as well ya know! Raph Koster was his name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raph_Koster
Raph knows a thing or two about making actual fun games. But he just works on the initial design and development of said game. Afterwards he usually gets kicked out of the project once it's time to launch and the game becomes maintained by people who didn't design it, hence they don't know a damn thing about running it.
One o' tha reasons why UO went to shit, as did SWG. George Lucas can go suck a ducks dick. I heard Richard Garriot went crazy ya know.
Yeah the Richard "aka Lord British" "aka lives in a real castle" Garriot. I heard one time he chased a burglar out of his house with a long sword while screaming like a mad man. The guy probably holds a scepter while taking a shit.
Anyways, that's what I think about houses in mmorpgs. MMOs suck by the way but that's a story for another day.
haha. great post.
Too bad I've never played UO. I'm Ragnarok Online addicted anyway. @_@
ragnarok sucks
I was hooked on UO bad back in the day. That was an MMO that would put hair on your chest. Where greifing was inevitable, and you couldn't walk through the wilderness without being in constant fear of PKs. It was real, in the real world someone is probably waiting around the corner to screw you over. And there are no special rules that keep them from doing it. UO was like that, they kept it real. I have friends that play WoW and they don't understand what it was like.
> [...] I mean, I don't like 4chan [...]
You must be really bored then, why else would you post here if you don't like it?
>>11 fails because 4chan is not 4-ch
