Man I would hate to have to design the sequel to such a monster. How do you preserve the precocious balance and tight-solidity of the game and revolutionize it at the same time? My guess is they're going to be keeping the races and not changing the overall template too much.
From what I've seen they haven't added a whole lot to it. Same interface and resources, just looks prettier. I'm sure there will be new vehicles and stuff but it all looks so familiar. And that's probably not a bad thing.
Nope, I like the idea that they aren't changing much. Being and avid SC player myself, I was rather afraid of the idea of a SC2. But eh, it seems they aren't going to whore it out with 5 new races and a new economical system and blahblahblah.
I'm hoping for the best, anyway.
The units look really strange though, since they aren't sprites anymore. Everything's too shiny :(
I don't know if I'm into these marines with shields. Feels a bit too much like the footmen from Warcraft.
But we're still a ways away from the final build. I remember how the first screenshots for Starcraft I looked back in the day. They had all kinds of weird stuff, like guardians attacking air targets.
Well, with the exception of Diablo, Blizzard has never really been gritty. The 'craft' series always had a kind of illustrationy/cartoony look.
But yeah, I wouldn't mind a little more grit my self.

Well, Starcraft has enough grime to it. Terrans have nice rusty metallic textures and the zerg are goatse-like and downright phallic. The Protoss are uhh... yellowey? :P
Well, I'd guess it'd be nice if both Warcraft and Starcraft graphics looked a little bit more like their awesome cinematic sequences. Which probably would mean more grit and less toon.

So I just watched the gameplay video, and though we didn't see much of the Zerg there are some CRAZY new weapons available to the protoss and terran.
I hope they do a Blizzard-worthy job of balancing this, because it seems the opportunity for a protoss player to prism-rush an enemy, or for terrans to bounce across any terrain with their reapers seem huge. I think the hopping-ability of the reapers is something I'd rather see in a zerg unit. The Terrans already have medics, but now they have units that can move across almost all terrain without dropships? I guess the medics don't have jetpacks, so they're not immortal. And from the video, it looks like the shuttles/drop-ships drop units a lot slower than they currently do, this might mean no more shuttle/reaver micro raiding. What will the Koreans Do???
It also looks like the air units have bounding-boxes and are no longer stackable.

I understand that a maximum of 12 units selectable at once, shitty troop AI, no construction queue, no guard command, and no default orders from factories- among other things- results in a tedious game where victory goes not to the one with the best strategies, but to the one who has had the most practice babysitting their units and fighting the braindead interface.

What's wrong with requiring players to pay attention? You seem to forget that Starcraft was released in 1998, AI resources were limited. And frankly, I can't imagine using a construction que in Starcraft where placement and timing are critical, although the workers could stand to be smarter with regard to resource collection/waypoint build commands. The game could allow players to select more than 12 units, and I expect Starcraft II will change this, but in most situation, unit groups don't need to exceed 12, perhaps with exception of the Zergling swarm. The limited number forces the player to regiment his army in intelligent groups and requires more coordination between different unit types.

If you have any attention to spare, then you aren't attacking (or being attacked) on enough fronts.

Why do players need to be forced to do this? If it's the superior strategy, dividing up one's army intelligently will win anyway; otherwise, it's a flaw in the underlying game design. Good coordination will definitely grant a tactical edge. Artificial constraints shouldn't be needed to enforce good playing style. The interface should be as transparent as possible.

There are many ways to obliterate a "clusterfuck". I recommend you check out some of the televised matches on Youtube, you'll see some pretty graceful playing there.
Those matches are interesting imho. You'll enjoy it, at least they not using the retarded map edit with max crystals ores, bleh hated those back in days. if you fight protoss. full defense with photon cannon then massive carrier... ugh what a lowdown.

I'm thinking burrowing supply depots = good.
Although I'm more excited about the Protoss' warp-in abilities.
People have been worried about the Terrans's new Radar dish, but if I understand it correctly, it operates in a limited, visible sweep, and only picks up red blips on the minimap and main screen, so a skilled player should be able to dodge the radar's sweep if he's quick and careful, and land sneak attacks on Terran bases. Also, the location of the radar tower becomes obvious from the visible sweep.
Also, the Protoss Soul Hunter apparently has been axed, to the relief of Protoss-loving people everywhere.

Some of the information is obviously wrong though, ground weps/armor upgrades will definetely be kept at the forge, and this guy obviously made a few minor errors with the tech-tree, build-order descriptions.
still, mostly good stuff to hear, I think. and it comes with a 17 minute video that's pretty cool.
I'd still much rather have a Diablo III from Blizzard.
Or a World of Diablo. :-)
I actually had the honour to play Starcraft 2 at GenCon Indianapolis this year, and I must say that it is as good as it had been hyped up to be, if not better.
