Hold it!

The fourth Ace Attorney game is hitting the streets in America on the 19th this month!

Meet Apollo Justice, a new attorney who'll be filling Phoenix's shoes. The game system has incorporated DS-specific features like the ones in the first game's bonus case, and you'll also be checking for signs of nervousness and stuff while in court.

The game should be easily accessible for newcomers.

This is the best visual novel series ever.

Agreed, if for no other reason that we get hardly any visual novels in English, let alone whole series of them.

I finished the game today. I like the series, but I wish they fixed the game mechanics. The proceedings are always painfully obvious, giving you the same hint many times before asking you to produce evidence... except once in a while, they'll throw a very hard riddle, asking you to follow the twisted game logic to demonstrate in an oblique way what you have already realized in a more straightforward way.
If you play the game as intended, giving too many wrong replies will empty your lifebar, and an empty lifebar means restarting the whole chapter and skipping through it, which is fucking stupid.
Of course this system is supposed to deter trial and error. AFAIK in the original GBA games, the instant saves were deleted on reload, only the end-of-chapter saves stayed around. But since they dropped this stupid idea for the NDS, nothing prevents you from using trial and error.
So any sensible player will save often. Which means that the lifebar is no longer a threat at all - just an annoyance that forces you to save often. (Or after every question, if you're almost empty).

They should have removed the lifebar completely.

And the text scrolls way to damn slow. They sure did a lot of work to give it rhythm, but it's just a way to pad the game duration for those journalist dumbfucks who measure the quality of a game by the number of hours you'll get to play it.

I hope I've rambled enough to get to the "post truncated", since I'm gonna talk about the story (this is the sort of game where even talking about what happens the first five minutes should be considered a huge spoiler).

Over the course of the series, they managed to get many of us to accept pretty much everything in their universe. Things like channeling the spirits of the dead, and using it for a trial - right from the first game.
But in the last case of AJ, the ridiculousness of the series took a new turn for the worse.
A character explains how events that happened many years ago are connected to more recent events. You get to choose which scenes to jump to, some are in the past, some in the present. AND THEN YOU GET TO USE EVIDENCE YOU GATHERED IN THE PRESENT AND SHOW IT TO PEOPLE IN THE MOTHERFUCKING PAST WITHOUT ANY ATTEMPT AT JUSTIFYING IT STORY-WISE.
There are a few excuses you could invent for this, but most of them are bullshit, or would start with "I bet that in the next game they will explain that..."
It's even more annoying when you know that the same story could have been easily told without this ridiculous and voluntary plot hole.

I'll be pressing through it at fast speed anyway so I would hope such journos would be doing the same in order to obtain a relatively accurate hour count.

No matter how I read that I don't get what you mean. In the AA series, the text scrolls pretty much at the exact speed the words would be said if the game were voice acted. In other words, much slower than the normal reading speed - although not horribly slow either. You can't skip text you haven't already read at least once at the normal scrolling speed. It's pretty frustrating - especially since the scrolling comes with a loud beeping noise.

So they took out the feature where pressing a button while it's scrolling makes it scroll faster?

This feature has always been there on DS, but only as long as you have already read this specific text once. Maybe you got your game used, in this case you probably wouldn't know. Or maybe you're talking about the GBA versions? Anyway, the behavior hasn't changed for AJ since the previous DS games.

I don't mean the fast skip on the touch screen, I mean how you press a button and it moves slightly faster although far from instantaneous, but only for that page of text, and you have to press it over and over while your fingers wear out.

what?

You're stupid or something. It's impossible to speed up text that hasn't been read before.

I am a slow reader myself, so the speed it's scrolling at is perfect for me. Fuck you native English speakers.

Not native, nor some sort of "speed-reader", so I seriously think that anyone who is comfortable enough with English to read it without a dictionary would find the scroll speed aggravating.

The text moves as if it was being spoken, and the pacing is part of building up suspense.

Except that it doesn't work.

Works for me.

I'm sure you'd enjoy reading books with sort of forced slow scrolling, too, right?
