Hye, i thought it would be kinda neat if everyone posted their thoughts on the most terrifying bosses of even regular fights they've had in games. either because you were grossly underleveled, or the boss was messing with your head, or something like that.
I guess one example would be the first time i got pretty far into MGS 2. I had been playing for a while, and then the colonel was telling me all sorts of weird shit, and that i should give up, or turn off my game, and that everything was a lie and blah blah - it was impossible for me to know if it was all real or some simulation. it was so disorienting that when i came to the boss fight and i saw like 20 metal gears (having had a lot of problems defeating the MG in MGS1) i was like "wtf! this can't be a fight i can win!" and i just gave up.
another example was fighting Giygas in Earthbound. the last stretch of the game starts to make you really feel like you're in some strange alien place, and you're all alone. then, when you finally get to the last boss - it's all wrong! You can throw everything you have at it, and it means nothing! he can kill you instantly. He talks to you, and he's all crazy and tells you that he's happy, or that it hurts. the only way to defeat him is to pray. you have to keep praying, but about halfway through doing so the game tells you that the prayers were swallowed up by the darkness...
Anyway, i just love games like this that play with your head!
I would have to say this game
http://forevergeek.com/games/hardest_game_boss_ever.php
i can just imagine playing that, getting to the last boss and declaring loudly in the arcade "Well what the fuck is THIS shit!?"
"Why not just have some mechanism kick me in the balls repeatedly while you're at it!?"
RE4 Regenerators/Iron Maidens (not bosses, but you don't fight many of them) part of the game and the prison area, where I wasted 2-3 rounds into the "wiggly-sack" and jumped a couple feet out of my seat. They just creep the fuck out of me. Also, Del Lago boss' easter egg.
Half Life 2's zombie playground, the part when you start facing runners. I absolutely hate really fast things. Also Alien vs Predator 2 while playing on the human side.

Not terrifying, just... Hard. That player probably continued 20 times at least to get to that boss. IIRC I read a post on a forum about that game being impossible to clear under 1CC standards.
I don't remember if it was in that game specifically (I know it was a game made by the same company), but there was an awesome pattern that fired a "railgun" spiral drill effect (like in Quake 2) that broke apart.

Arcade game mechanics meant to eat quarters. In bullet hell you get a thick cloud of bullets. In arcade bullet hell, you get a really thick cloud of really fast bullets.
The Butcher from Diablo. Surely no one was expecting to get slaughtered and crushed so soon in the game.
my fiance told me when she originally played Diablo, she got hella scared when she heard "FREASH MEAT!" and ran the hell out of the dungeon. after that she didn't want to play the game because it was too scary.
she plays Diablo 2 hough, which is less scary. actually, i'd have to agree that i found a lot of diablo scary...
>>5 haha i remember the butcher, badaaaaass. Although i killed the mofo the first time i faced him, what a classic:)
A boss that pissed me off was Ultemicia in FFVIII, my god when she goes into her last transformation and my entire party has like little hp , my god...def one of the best battles i had in the FF series, even the ultimate weapons of the series didn't piss me off that much..or scared me.
Man, i want to face her again..some day:)
fighting a woman without a face was pretty cool. the ending made me happy. and confused me for a while, but it was cool.
I find that FFVIII was definitely an acquired taste, like beer or wine. kinda weird at first, but if you kept coming back every once in a while and tasted it, you found out how great it was. you can go through the whole damn game at lvl 1!

It's that game, you can see it in the video.

Hell, yeah! First time I heard the "FRESH MEAT" I ran out of the dungeon too. I mean wow, who DID expect that? Just after calming down and buying some pots, I went back down again and got happily slaughtered, haha.
To add to the topic, I might say that the last battle of Panzer Dragoon for the Sega Saturn was quite impressive. Gave you a sense of scale, you really felt like a little nothing in front of that huge dragon. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSTzoD2xcXM
Also the last boss of Ecco the Dolphin on Megadrive/Genesis. The last two levels plus the boss seemed so out of context and disgusting compared to the magnificence of the game... that it creeped me out (although a lot of things creeped me out in this game, partly due to my fear of underwater stuff. The (friendly) huge blue whale and the very strange molecule creeped me out, haha.
And the boss from Sword Of Vermillion always creeped me out. And huge stress amounts, because he was creepy AND hard.
The boss i've had the most trouble with is the Iselia Queen in Star Ocean 2 for the playstation. I get about 5 seconds into the battle and then my party either
A.) Dies horribly
B.) gets turned to stone
Oh well...at least the first 5 seconds of the boss music is cool...
heh, i haven't tried that yet, but i saw some vids of some people owning the queen in like 10 seconds. although, that is based slightly on luck of her moving the right way. bunny shoes ftw.
speaking of that, i found that after i had tweaked my game a bit, i wanted to actually NOT tweak it. It just made an otherwise hard game too damn easy. maybe on rena's playthrough.
Hmmm... the horrible gundam monster in the 2nd level of "Rockman Zero" for GBA... i still couldn't beat him...
like every floor in Etrian Odyssey.
SAITAMA SAITAMA F.O.E.!
Holy hell, Shodan on System Shock 2...
As a young one, playing the various games in the Doom series, when I would start off in that small room stocked with guns and ammo, and there's only one exit: a door/teleport/pit that leads to a battle with Satan himself... and as many hell knights, spider masterminds and cyberdemons as the computer could reasonable process without a system meltdown.
It doesn't have quite the same effect now that I have hair on my chest.
But that giant puss-shooting vagina is quite frightening, too.
"Boy, do I love playing this here Romancing SaGa game for the PS2. Hmm, y'know it's been a while since I've been to Weston. Why don't I just stop on over there and pick up some Ga-"
:O
"JEWEL BLASTER"
>:O
SPOILER!
in legend of zelda Oot, that first spider boss scared the crap out of me! but he wasnt acually that hard, in fact he was one of the simplest bosses!
is that really a spoiler? the first boss?
REALLY!?
In Resident Evil 4 in the dungeon/sewers of that Salizard guys castle were he sends his henchman after you. I was playing it in my basement at like 2 in the morning and the furnace kicked on so I couldn't hear the whole cutscene were they send the guy after you so I skipped it. And I had that guy coming after me with no explanation and I couldn't figure out how to kill him so I was trapped there in that room with the elevator trying to kill the guy. Only fight in video games that scared me a little.
I still cant get over the barbed wire hospital bed guy from Silent Hill 2.
final fantasy 1 and 2 played on a gba.. forgot the last bosses' names.. hell, the damage i inflicted for about 3 to 4 turns, he just heals it up for one freakin turn! more like gruelling than terrifying.. I hate rpg games anyways.. i was just wondering what the fuss was all about when it comes to the ff games, so i started to play the very first ffs.. it sucks.. the ps2 ffs surely are better, as others say..
they were so brutal back then because new games weren't appearing every day, there was a lack of pocket money for kids those days - so they had to be long, difficult, and engaging.
Back then, it was great. nowadays - i don't have time to grind out 50 hours through some Moe RPG just to figure out that they LOVE EACH OTHER - because three days from when i bought this one, another one just came out. Either make 'em easier, or think up a better reaosn why I care about what's going on.
I just started playing Mother 3 a little while ago, and since it's such a new game I won't spoil things for everyone, but one of the first bosses you fight turns out to be this mechanized cyborg who not only is incredibly powerful, was probably responsible for killing a lot of people before you got there.
Now only that, but he looks pretty scary, the music doesn't help, and he hit for a buttload of damage. Add to the fact you have limited curative items by the time you arrive, the strategy involved made me stop a ponder every time i hit attack.
Finally, and to earthbound fans this should be a familiar race - once you finally do defeat it, it lets out a final blast that basically destroys your whole party - and you have to have enough health so that by the time you finish the battle, the running tally of your health doesn't round down to zero. awesome.
actually, on that note - The battle with Mr. Passion in Mother 3 isn't so much creepy, but the prelude to the battle is.
You walk into the room and everything is flying around poltergeist style, the music that churns the room is hanuting and really makes you not want to talk to the guy in the middle.
I just had to sit and take it all in for a few moments.
Fighting Indalecio in Star Ocean 2 was pretty scary-ish. He talks to you while you're fighting, and pretty much every attack feels like he's trying to rip the universe in half. Then when he changes into his second form, the dual voices throws you off. He takes up like half the screen!
"Is this the best you can do!?"
Aw dude, I FREAKED at Beyond Good and Evils last boss.
Most scary boss? Your girlfriend. Seriously, you have to play the first splatterhouse.
Yeah, I would have to agree that her transforming back into her normal selve and screaming "Help me!" before turning back would be kinda scary.

And the fact that i was barely about ten years old when i came in contact with that game, Jesus, i had nightmares.
in Final Fantasy VIII, the last battle kinda screwed me up bigtime... First off, no matter how many times I reloaded and tried again, I had to face Ultimecia with a party that I had largely ignored, totally throwing me off my game. So, I had to let them die, have them carried off by angels, so that I was basically left with the only my highly leveled characters. That added a spice of danger, at least.
But when she got to her last transformation, she became something more abstract - her face was replaced by a shining light, and she looked slightly robotic to me as well as organic. It was kinda cool, but also creepy. I was glad that got away from crap like Bizarro Sephiroth, anyway
Ultimecia??? pffttt.....
Omega weapon was much more scarier....imagine you walked on that hall and found there was nothing before. And you ring the bell and you find a big goddamn monster appears all of a sudden. I would get a heart attack.
