RPGs for DS (42)

1 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-11-19 00:24 ID:a2sJJ704

I've just got a DSlite. :)
I like to play RPGs so I wondered if anycone can recommend me good RPGs for DS.
I've already the remakes of FF in mind and "The World Ends With You", too.

Any recommendations?

Well let's see:

There's the obvious Pokemon... not great RPGs unless you really like the grinding/development aspect, but hey the monsters are cute

Etrian Odyssey is a decent Wizardry clone.

Mystery Dungeon games! Shiren the Wanderer, Izuna, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. That actually reminds me, I wanted to play Izuna again...

Mario & Luigi Partners in Time good good reviews, but I haven't played it yet.

Dragon Quest IV should be out by now, idk I haven't looked at DS games in a while. I heard they were remaking V and VI too.

Lunar Knights was a decent action RPG, though the RPG-ish elements were a little subdued. It's more an action-adventure game.

Rpg / Sim hybrid by Atlus called "my world my way", february 2009. Pretty cool game, can't wait to play it

Disgaea DS is out. I miss the voice acting in most places, but it's fun to have a portable version of this fantastic tactical rpg.

(I'm not console trolling here, Disgaea PSP is objectively better than Disgaea DS in numerous ways. So is Disgaea PS2. It's an awful port, frankly.)

Anyway, >>2 recommended most of the things that I would, so I'll just mention that Atlus is also releasing Ys DS soon and I'm looking forward to that.

OP here

Thanks! I really appreciate it. :)
If anyone has more RPGs to recommend... feel free to do it.

Do people not like Tactics A2 around here? I like it a lot. It's so much more varied than Disgaea is.

I want to like FFTA, but, goddamn the game is long. I mean, length is okay when you've got a killer plot (like FFT) that keeps you rearing to see what happens next, but with FFTA not only do I not get 3d rotatable, but it seems like I've got to go through like 10 battles before I get to see Ramza, oops, I mean Marche, do anything worth remembering.

I mean, i'm already tired of it and I've still got like 10 places to unlock... not to mention I've probably only finished about 120/300 missions.

once I finish it I'd rather gouge out my eyes than replay it.

I just got Dragon Quest IV... it's good. Definitely one of the better DS RPGs so far. Hopefully USA gets V and VI too.

V and VI are coming here.

dragon quest monsters joker
even if you don't like pokemon, its worth a shot

World Ends With you is awesome. FFTA2 is awesome. Etrian Odyssey II is awesome. Izuna 2 is awesome. Seconding all those.

Custom Robo Arena is more on the action/adventure side, but you have to go buy parts and customize your mech and it gets fairly detailed without drowning you in stats and minutiae. I'd say it ranks up there with Pokemon, half exploring, half strategy, but there's also the actual fighting -- it's very much action based, real time combat. I enjoyed it a whole lot.

Megaman Battle Network and Star Force are pretty fun action/adventure games, it runs up there with Pokemon too. There are RPG elements, but a lot of it revolves around real time action fights like Custom Robo.

Time Hollow is more a point-and-click adventure game, sorta like Phoenix Wright, but it's fun too. Definitely worth a try if you like text-based adventure games.

The more striking difference between Disgaea DS and PSP is that the DS port does not contain the bugs that the PSP version does. Disgaea players (with both systems and the PS2 game) would be more inclined to buy the DS version than the PSP version as they are both the same, but the DS version has more extras without the bugs.

Hmmm... I've been waiting for some new RPG game at DS. Waiting by playing RagnarokOnline DS, but it still in Japan, hoping they (ROM hacker) can translate the game faster (gosh... minimum time is 3 months! Damn [--']) So waiting English language RPG...

Bugs like graphics that don't completely suck, high quality music, full voice acting with language select, and diagonal throw?

18 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-01-05 02:35 ID:Heaven

>>17
Was talking about more serious game-killing bugs rather than features already experienced by PS2 players. Fail as troll.

The Dark Spire. It's like japan remade wizardry, but better looking.

i was indeed a little miffed at the lack of a diagonal throw in the DS version. I mean, they even mention it as a feature in Disgaea 2!

i was impressed they decided to include an oldschool classic mode. Also, the visuals are impressive. Comic book horror feel?

First I've heard of this game. Love the nostalgic feel to it, definitely gonna pick this one up.

Contact - decent action rpg

I thought they did this already with Etrian Odyssey and Busin.

Not that I'd mind another quality first-person dungeon-crawler coming out, of course.

Busin was made by Racjin. Dark Spire is made by Success.

Kind of old news, but is anyone else excited about the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy Legend II for the DS?

http://kotaku.com/5131675/final-fantasy-legend-ii-getting-ds-remake

Personally, I can't wait. FFL2 was one of my favorite games for the Game Boy, and I would love to see how Kawazu and crew expand on the original.

27 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-02-20 15:29 ID:uRiNE3GT

>>26
I've been playing the original in anticipation.

Apollo is a dick and I hate him.

28 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-02-20 21:48 ID:5JA5a5S/

why legend 2 and not 1? why did thy skip - aside from the extra story I suppose.

btw, i was so happy when I managed to find all three at a pawn shop once.

>>28
They already did two remakes of FFL1.

Granted, one was for the failed Wonderswan system, and the other was for cell phones in Japan only, but still.

30 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-02-21 22:17 ID:hpTr9fr9

wait... wut? FFL2 for the DS? DO WANT.

31 Name: Talentless Troll : 2009-02-23 04:35 ID:Lo+gR+YK

I'd rather FFL3, but FFL2 is still fucking awesome. I was never able to finish it, I killed Apollo once, but Arsenal ripped me a new one.

The upcoming RPG Black Sigil: Blade of the exile, the game's graphic is similar to FF6 and Chrono Trigger. I'm looking forward to this game. 17th of March!!! :)

33 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-03-02 15:45 ID:jW61XrqK

I was so surprised to find out they were remaking FFL2. Here I was thinking I was the only one who loved that game (at least outside of Japan).

34 Name: Talentless Troll : 2009-03-04 05:38 ID:Lo+gR+YK

I'd suggest steering clear of the Dragon Quest remakes, unless you've never played the originals. I was looking up information of DQ IV and V for the DS and it just made me RAGE. They completely ruined both of my favorite DQ games.

I honestly don't understand why they didn't just use the same localization as the original DQ4...

35 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-03-04 14:07 ID:EPanADUp

>>34

what's the problem with DQ 4 and 5 on the DS?

36 Name: Talentless Troll : 2009-03-04 22:30 ID:Lo+gR+YK

The new localization, ie character, item, monster, spell, city names. Its mostly nitpicking on my part, but when you have the entire game memorized in the old style names, and then you play the DS version and they tell you to go to a city, you're like where the fuck is that? The character names and the spell names don't bother me too much. The spells are the same as DQ8, and the names are the original JP version of the names, but the city and monster names irk me. Also the different accents used in cities looks kind of annoying.

Again if you never played the original NES version of DQ4, go ahead and get the DS version. I know DQ5 was never released stateside, but there is a really good translation patch for the ROM. DQ6's translation patch was pretty shitty last I checked so I'll probably get the DS version just so I can play it.

The World Ends With You

best game for the ds so far, aside from pokemon.

38 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-03-05 18:45 ID:EPanADUp

I dunno about that, but I suppose it's up to interpretation. Haven't played it myself.

39 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-03-15 09:56 ID:uRiNE3GT

I'm surprised they haven't gotten sued for that.

41 Name: Geeky Gamer : 2009-04-23 01:15 ID:i+t+F5cK

Have you tried Rune Factory? It is an fantasy version of Harvest Moon and is absolutely fantastic.

42 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2009-04-23 15:23 ID:EPanADUp

>>42 maybe I suck, but I immediately disliked that game. I thought I would love it, but I didn't like any of the characters, and there didn't seem to be a way to drop anything without losing it. Basically the game assumed you knew what you were doing, which is always a bad idea.
