Often when you ask fans of the oldschool Sonic games and cartoons today about him, you'll hear things like "Sonic isn't what he used to be anymore".
But what exactly do you think happened to Sonic as a videogame character, regardless of the shittyness of his games lately? Did the Sonic cast really change that much over the years? Does he really not feel like the same Sonic we knew anymore?
Opinions, thoughts?
to be quite honest, I don't understand what the whole deal is with sonic hatin'. Obviously, Sonic couldn't stay in 2D - you just can't do it.
Sonic has always been marketed as more "edgy" than say his counterpart Mario. Therefore, he would get slightly different or dark roles than Him, but in the same way they've branched out into different kinds of titles than what they began as.
Everyone loved Sonic on the dreamcast, just like how everyone loved mario 64, so the only thing that's really changed is the occasional bad gameplay screwups (which is a shame, but certainly not the norm), and gameplay additions. I fail to see the difference between Sonic getting beast powers and Mario getting Fludd.
Had Sonic stayed closer to his 2D roots and not branched out, and kept a more kiddish style, Sonic team would be criticized for it.
Well, that's what I think anyway.
>>2 has a pretty good point, especially about the FLUDD comparison.
Also, from what I've seen, I think the Rush and the storybook games and I guess unleashed to an extent (haven't played any of them outside of the rush games), Sonic is more or less himself as long as he's not bogged down by other characters.
Of course, this isn't really going into gameplay, but I doubt that was the original intention of the thread. That little movie Sega did was pretty amusing and captured Sonic pretty well, and making him mute again was an interesting twist, if only to make the movie universal. It'd be neat if they could make him mute in another game as well, even if it's unlikely, just to experiment on how far they can take him with gestures and a few sounds alone.

Exactly, I'm actually more eager to hear people's opinions on Sonic's character and the cast more than his recent games.
I'm sure there are enough threads on those on the internet.
As I stated in another thread I never got into the Sega to begin with, but from what I know, Sonic was basically a tried and true game. Sort of like Mario games of the time. In Mario games his whole purpose was to save the Princess. Sonic's whole purpose was to stop Robotnik/Eggman from getting the Emeralds.
Than plotlines happened (and twelve year olds, but thats completely unrelated). I guess somehow Mario having a plotline made more sense, seeing as the characters were humans, and there were enough characters (ie, Toadstool/Peach, Luigi, Toad, Koopa/Bowser) so backstory for tham would be nice. However Sonic didn't have that luxury there was only him and Robotnik, and Tails later and Knuckles than bajillion other furries.
And thats really as far as I can talk about since I haven't played any of the Sonic games past Sonic the Hedehog 2...
Also from what I see, Sonic gets a lot of hate from the fact that most of his fans are twelve year olds, or furries, or both.

you would think that would make him MORE popular, considering all the new characters = more furry.
