[College] Discuss your Major [Students] (22)

I'm currently in a community college for another half year, and I am undecied about what I want to do. For the college students on this board (I'm assuming there will be quite a few), could any of you discuss your majors, your experiences with them, your job aspirations, and your attitudes towards the material? I have done a decent amount of research on the topic, but I would like to hear some first hand accounts.

Computer & Information Technology (formerly Management Information Systems)

I'll graduate in May! Finally. I'm a little dissatisfied with this degree, though - the emphasis is a lot more on the 'business' side of things, and less the technological side.

Is that BS?

I was majoring in Computer Information Systems, which sounds like the same thing you're taking. However, since it was more of a AS major, I switched to Computer Science... now I have another year of math to catch up with before I can transfer to a four-year. :(

I started an art college after high school, but I dropped out after one semester because I just wasn't interested. I'm going to Pittsburgh to major in Game Art & Design (you can laugh), but I'm going to stay at my friend's house south of here to work for a while, and possibly go to the community college there. Kinda screwed up my plans since I applied to the nearest art college without thinking about it or even looking at other colleges, but I'm not in a huge rush :(

Go to the community college to knock out some academic courses, I mean.

Does anyone here have a non technical (other than the psychology major, I mean) major? I want to hear about the experiences of some people who don\'t have a technical major, so I can learn about how hard it is for these people to get a employed after college.
Personally, my math related skills are absolutely abysmal, so a tech or math/science major isn\'t really an option (not to mention that I have little interest in such subjects.)
As of now, I\'m considering either a social science (most likely psychology) major or one related to writing (advertising, in particular, seems to be a good possibility).
Is anyone in a similar situation? Does anyone have any advice for me?

I'm working on a fine arts/visual arts degree. I'm thinking of doing illustration as a career after I'm done. I absolutely don't want to become a teacher. Am I totally screwed??

It certainly is. Too bad it took me 7 years to get it, lol.

Well, I wish you luck, but I\'m not really sure how hard it would be to find a job (excluding teaching) in that market. I would have to say that networking, or simply having some very impressive work to display, would be the keys to getting a job in that area.

Ah. Heh, looks like it might take me that long for CS.

Not like I'm really in a hurry, though. I used to want to get it over with, but pretty much everyone I talk to who finished college talk about how their life is sort of boring and how they want to go back. Heck, my older sister was so bored she did go back, for a different major.

Business Law, which is reading intensive but fun. I don't plan to go to law school though.

Video game major sounds very interesting, not something to laugh about. But I'm told it's a very competitive field, and because of that, it is really hard to get a job. Good luck, hope you have the determination to make it! I don't think I could.

The bad part is that, other than still taking classes, my 'college life' has actually been over for a while. I don't live on campus anymore, since I lost my scholarships... I wound up moving back home with my parents. It's cheap, but I don't really do anything except go to class, go to work, come home.

I'm an old man at 24. :(

Electrical Engineering. We do all the hard stuff so art majors don't have to. Math and science out the ass, and I'm loving it.

A Bachelor's degree in Psychology can get you a job as a secretary -- it is not lucrative. Try a hard science if you want to go anywhere with just one degree. Same thing goes for anthropology -- get set to work at a coffeeshop.

My major is acting. i'm so lame, one day I went to WP and banned that loser Mich The Weird and all her AFF friends. I have yet to unban Mich but until then, I continue to learn to act like a good admin.

My major is Physics; I am in first year. The hardest thing is a Core Curriculum class I am taking: Religion and Literature. I am drowning in all those words and we are supposed to analyse book-long texts. Arrgh. Words confuse me.

You seem to be the opposite of me. I\'ve been able to take all sorts of social science and literature classes with putting in only minimal work, but I found college algebra (the most basic of the required math courses) really hard.
