No seriously, the "4-ch meetup" thread made me realize that apparently like everyone here is into manga/anime/etc. That hadn't really dawned on me before. I'm not especially interested in anything that comes from Japan (like, not any more than any other country). Am I alone?
There are probably a few others, but the majority here probably has at least some minor interest n Japanese culture.

Speaking for myself, I don't like anime, but I do read manga mainly because I'm a big comic book guy and try to read as many different kinds of comics as I can come across. Although, I'm interested in Japan, too.
I watch anime, i read manga and i even like J-POP, but i'm not really interested joining any anime club or gathering stuff like that, besides, those are just for killin time, not to be taken seriously.
i kinda confused when i said anime = cartoon to some of my friend and they got angry O.o wtf ??? is that an insult or something ?

Apparently "cartoon" just refers to that crappy non-Japanese stuff, if you ask these anime fanatics.
I don't think there's anything wrong with cartoon.
Osamu tezuka's stuff looks more like "cartoon" than "anime". It's all the same thing anyway
Let's organize a meetup for those of us who don't like anime or manga or Japan. How about we all meet at a Denny's in Wyoming?

that sounds real interesting
I\'m really glad to see someone who shares my views here. I really don\'t care for anime either (I\'ve always found it rather boring, personally), and I\'m not interested in Japan as most here seem to be. As for Japanese culture, I am thankful that I have been raised in an individualist society where everything isn\'t based on an \"us and them\" mentality. I really have no desire to conform to the ways of the majority; many of those who think of Japan as the anime fanatics do (a country of where pretty much everything sort of fringe behavior is acceptable) are really quite mistaken. These individuals would be suprised to know the extent of collectivist thought present in Japan.
Anyways, readers are probably wondering, by now, how I ended up here. First of all, I am an admirer of the Japanese 2-channel bbs. I consider anonymous bbs communication desireable as opposed to what is found on most forum systems (an identity based system in which posters often try to build their online-egos.)
Anyways, this site is quite far from what 2-channel is, but it does have the right idea. Ideally, an English language, anonymous bbs would be able to appeal to those with a variety of interests, but this site is clearly visited primarily by those who simply occasionally dabble in interests outside of anime. While 2-channel has huge numbers of posts in boards so specific as those related to the histories of different regions, the majority of posts here tend to, at least somewhat, relate to Japan. I find it rather odd that, on a forum frequented primarily by English speakers, so many posts on the entertainment related sections discuss Japanese media.
Basically, I believe that anonymous English language bbs systems such as 4-ch have potential for attracting some decent discussions, but that they will fail to do so until they provide some appeal to those other than anime fans and Japanophiles.
I do not know if I belong in this thread or not. I don't hate anime and I do infact watch some of it (I can count the number of series I've watched a significant portion of on my digits). I've even read a few mangas. I've posted on 2ch before. It is a big forum with a lot of people from a different culture and I'm curious. If 2ch was a russian board instead, I would probably still post on it in the same fashion.
I actually came here from 4chan. I only really was a /b/tard and I read a few of the world4ch boards... and noticed that they are (mostly) full of morons. I started reading /sup/, /soc/, /code/, /politics/, and /net/. Sure, there is some Japanese bias in /net/ and /politics/. It is only recently that I have read /anime/ or /manga/ and started to acquire anime on my own (instead of borrowing DVDs from friends). I think I've stuck around because it kind of feels like usenet used to (or what little I remember of it). Intelligent discussion and debates but also humour. I don't think anonymity really has anything to do with this, just that the community here doesn't suck.
I like some animus and mangus but can't stand the hardcore nerds or the imo horrible jap society.
You're an idiot.
if you're not into anything related to Japan, then why are you here? you are suspicious.
STATE YOUR PURPOSE!

Literature board has only a little japanophilia. You may post there!
i admit i have quite a bias towards japanese video games. that's not to say i don't enjoy western games, the majority of jap ones just interest me more. but as far as other japanese media goes, i'm not especially dedicated to any of it. i watch some anime, and a few japanese films, but certainly less so than their japanese equivalents. and i've only read about three mangas in my life, pornography excluded.
the thing is that this style of board is based entirely on 2ch, and really to even know that 2ch exists you have to have some level of interest in modern japanese culture. boards like this aren't really publicised outside of somewhat japophilic areas of the internet.
a lot of people just look at it and don't realise the whole anonymous posting philosophy, probably don't even notice people are posting anonymously, they just think it's a board running on outdated software from the 90s or so. your average internet user expects stuff like avatars and emoticons and all the other bloated phpbb shite that this style of board leaves behind.
should have been "less so than their western equivalents" orz
I enjoy anime in the same manner that I enjoy classic cartoons or saturday morning cartoons. Something to watch when I don't feel like getting off my ass and working. I read manga like I read regular comics and I think that people who dress up or act wapanese or whatever are KERAZY.
Of course I am also afraid of getting sober and finding work
BUT THAT IS ANOTHER THREAD IN ITSELF
