Why is it that whenever I go to one of these links I just seem to see the first and the last post in the thread? Everything else is missing.
Because the thread died, /news4vip/ goes through threads... really fast but even on other boards threads beyond a limit are archived and you have to pay $$ to view them or go to one of the offsite archives.

That sucks. It must be frustrating when searching for a solution to a problem. One finds someone posted that problem (first post) and a last post saying "thanks!".
At least "western style" forums keep all threads, and some even make them even more indexable for search engines by providing a low-fi version as well.

You realize we are talking about a forum with BILLIONS of posts right? Lets take some of the biggest boards from bigboards.com for an example. You have to pay for archives and search on somethingawful. On genmay you have to pay for search, and the index was pruned to make it just about useless a couple of times. Genmay wasn't even indexed by google/etc for a while because of robots.txt too. I fail to see how this agrees with your view of 'western style' forums keeping all posts and not charging to view archives. Hell, before google groups you had to pay for usenet archives too unless you found a free one specific to that group.
The solution is not optimal, but do they really have another choice?
The really interesting threads get mirrored anyway.
