I think Japan has found a balance between its traditional culture and western industralisum/consumerism. The result is a lifestyle that is unique to the country. However, the social pressures to perform well academically and commercially put a immense strain on the individual. From a outsiders view, it looks as if the Japanese are working them selves to death.
