How to type Japanese? (33)

To type Japanese characters... I would need? Japanese keyboard? Probably not going to happen, so...

2 Name: Anonymous : 2006-04-24 10:23 ID:kf1FyCx4

Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> Check 'install files for East Asian languages' -> Details -> Add keyboard from 'Japanese' in the drop down menu

This thread is now over. I'm just exploiting it for a KAMI while it's at the top.

i've trying for quite a while to figure out how to set up my computer to type japanese in kde...
anyone know how to do it?
switching to windows is not an option (at least not until i can run kmail, konqueror, kopete, koffice, amarok, and gwenview on it without having to muck about with cygwin).

Please see http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-263174-highlight-cjk+input.html. Even if you aren't using gentoo, the anthy/uim combo should work. Also, skim (http://www.scim-im.org/projects/skim) is a KDE-specific solution if you want total integration.

HTH.

Off topic, what's with the obnoxious 'spam catching'? I tried to use nice HTML-formatted hyperlinks previously and 4-ch threw some spam-related error at me. Is it trying to disallow multiple hyperlinks in a post? I've been able to include single links before...

i already tried that uim/scim/skim stuff... both scim and skim hang indefinitely when i try to start them...

While we're sort of on the subject, does anyone know of a Windows AIM client that will input and receive Japanese text correctly? All I can get is ?????'s. I occasionally receive Japanese correctly, but I think it is only from Mac users. I would just try out all the clients out there, but I'm on dial-up :_(

gaim[1] is the only one i know of.
i like kopete[2] better, but you can't use it on windows unless you use cygwin[3]...

>>11
it is the same version. i only have one version of gcc installed (3.4.4) and i compiled and installed a new version of firefox right before i compiled and installed scim the first time.

Thanks, the interface is a little ugly but gaim does the job.

You can also use wordporcessor + dictionary like Wakan to type japanese, given that you have japanese font installed on your system.

if you have xp, just go control panel>regional and language settings>languages>details>add language

or osmething

youll have a language toolbar and can switch between jap input and english input

eg typing de with jap input on set on hiragana = で

In .Xsession (or .xinitrc, or whatever):
export GTK_IM_MODULE=scim
export QT_IM_MODULE=scim
export XMODIFIERS="@im=SCIM"
scim -d

Make sure you have scim installed though (and kanna or something). I haven't for the life of me been able to get it to work with KDE/Qt apps though. Any hints?

canna (not kanna btw)
I prefer using kinput though (though there are iiimf and scim).
btw just copy/paste settings when X runs under LANG=ja_JP. To keep using english environment you can set LC_CTYPE to ja_JP, while keeping other LC_* to en_US.

This one is for fedora:
http://fedora.redhat.com/projects/i18n/iiimf-faq.html

Though the guide is for iiimf, with some tinkering, you can use kinput instead of iiimf.

you need to get skim - the IM for kde. I use kubuntu dapper and it comes already installed, you just need to configure it to

> In .Xsession (or .xinitrc, or whatever):

and download anthy for scim

I'm pretty sure trillian can view Japanese characters as well.
