I can only comment on the food. Fresh food like fruit, veg, milk etc is more expensive, but preprocessed crap is the same, maybe cheaper.

Very. Let's see...

Food: expensive. Instant crap in a kombini is about 100-200 yen but you can't live on that. Eating out goes from 400-ish for the cheapest beef bowl to 800-1000 for a nice meal and upwards of that for the more expensive places. Meat is pretty fuckin' expensive, as is fresh fruit. Veggies are so-so.

Drinks: 140-150 yen for a bottle of soda at most vending machines. Alcohol is slightly more than that. Bars and clubs rip you off to hell and back (lol 1000yen for a cocktail in Roppongi, fuck that)

Transportation: expensive but you learn to deal with it. You can get a commuter ticket, but it's only valid for the lines/stations you use to commute. If you change companies when changing lines you will pay more. (eg. metro to jr) Travelling in Tokyo will run you 130-500 ish. Travelling out of Tokyo will be upwards of that based on distance. Shinkanzen = lol pay out of your ass. If you go far enough it's cheaper to fly.

Rent: HURRRRRRRR. 40Kyen for a shitty guesthouse room, 50-150K for a room depending on location, anything upwards of that for bigger places. In Tokyo. The farther you move out the cheaper it gets.

Anything else?

1.00 EUR = 146.877 JPY
1.00 USD = 116.090 JPY

which puts things a bit into perspective for Europeans!
(As far as I know, Japan used to be very expensive, but got a lot more cheaper for europeans than for Americans)

If you live like a college student then Japan really isn't that expensive. I found most food prices to be only slightly higher than in America. But even then you can always find a better deal if you want to look for it.
Alcohol can be expensive if you're an idiot. But if you know the right places to look you can find some really cheap drinks too. In Kyoto there are two bars called 'Moon Walk' where the drinks are just 200 yen each. Get loaded there, then go to a club or wherever else.
Fashionable clothing will be pricey, but regular stuff isn't so bad.
Public transportation costs are reasonable, but they can add up if you're not careful. Even then it's still cheaper than owning a car and paying for gasoline/taxes/inspections/licenses and all that.

Good news for weeaboos, you can buy super cheap manga at used bookstores like Book OFF.

How expensive is it around the Hokkaido/Kyushu area? I went there for a holiday once like 10 years ago and absolutely loved it.

all you have to know is to stay out of bars, sleep on a friends couch and eat conbini food, and don't overspend on train fare. it will be pretty cheap. im a big fan of the oni koroshi 100 yen sake juice boxes.

traveling around japan is expensive ▄█▀█● but there are lots of beautiful places, so travelling is a little bit difficult to avoid. and yeah, it helps to have friends with couches or extra futons(❀ฺ´∀`❀ฺ)ノ
